“By the way, you let a full–blown coastline shoot–out hit the headlines in Celosia and didn’t breathe a word to me!” Laura scolded, still smarting from the surprise. She had only found out after seeing the news.

Although reporters never named names, online comments buzzed with wild theories. A handful guessed it was Whitethorn infighting–but those voices were drowned by speculation.

Laura, however, had needed only one glance to confirm it was the Whitethorn clan—and that Quinn had been in the thick of it.

“I was just about to tell you,” Quinn said quietly. “Everything’s settled now. Julius‘ father is in Celosian custody, and a life sentence is practically carved in stone.”

“So when are you coming home?” Laura asked.

“In a few days. We need to tie up the last loose ends here. Once we nail down the flight, I’ll let you know ahead of time.”

Julius still had a mountain of unfinished business waiting back in Azania.

Julius adjusted a knight with meticulous care, never lifting his calm gray eyes. “I would call it humoring him,” he corrected.

Everett’s voice rose, the tips of his ears flushing crimson. “Humoring? I played thirteen games, and in every single one I ‘won‘ by exactly one move. Thirteen times! Only a simpleton wouldn’t see he was throwing the match.”

Quinn’s lips parted, yet no proper sentence arrived. “Uh…”

The expression he wore nearly begged for applause. A thin sheen of sweat broke across Quinn’s temples, sheer exasperation humming beneath her polite smile.

Yes, she had advised Julius to soften her uncle’s suspicions, to put Everett at ease. Still, this… was not quite what she had envisioned.

“You can’t do it the same way every time,” she reminded, forcing lightness. “At least vary the pattern a little.”
