A flicker of something unreadable passed through Andrew Lane’s dark eyes. His gaze was steady and heavy as he asked, “Why didn’t you change into something else?”
Everyone gathered at The Lane Estate that night belonged to the city’s elite—people born with silver spoons in their mouths. To them, Emily Blair, the adopted daughter of The Lane Family and the child of a chauffeur, would always be an outsider.
Adoption was still adoption. No matter how kindly the Lane family treated her, Emily could never truly be one of them.
What’s more, everyone knew about the scandal—how Kevin Lane had thrown Emily out of the family. That public humiliation, and Kevin’s obvious attitude, made the others look down on Emily even more.
Some guests didn’t bother to hide their disdain. A few even sidled up to Isabella Austin, whispering just loud enough for the whole room to hear.
“Ms. Austin, you should watch out for Emily Blair. She’s refusing to wear the proper dress just to stand out—she’s clearly desperate for attention.”
“Exactly. And after she accused you of plagiarism? Clearly she’s got something against you. You should be careful.”
Seeing Andrew Lane’s obvious favor toward Isabella Austin, everyone was eager to curry favor with her.
Isabella’s eyes sparkled with calculation, but her expression remained gracious and unflappable, the perfect hostess.
“Oh, don’t say that. Ms. Blair isn’t like that at all. I trust her. She just took a wrong turn and didn’t realize I’m actually Vivian Martin.”
A nearby woman, well-practiced in the art of flattery, chimed in, “Well, thank goodness the truth came out. And Mr. Lane is on your side now—otherwise, who knows how much you would’ve suffered?”
Emily’s hands clenched slowly into fists. She drew a deep breath, forcing a smile onto her face.
“Since tonight is Grandfather’s birthday, I’d like to play a piece for him as a gift,” she announced, her voice calm.
She strode forward with purpose.
