Emily shot Elizabeth a look.
Given how tense things had gotten, they had to keep everyone calm—and that meant showing some sincerity.
She said, “Let’s give everyone a refund.”
Elizabeth was sharp. She didn’t need it spelled out to know that, in this situation, their best bet was to be upfront and honest.
It wasn’t just the people demanding refunds, either. Even those who hadn’t asked, Emily and Elizabeth refunded them all the same.
Emily stepped up to the girl at the center of the commotion, her voice gentle. “Since you’re not feeling well after eating our food, I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up. We’ll cover all the medical expenses.”
Her words cut through the crowd, clear and steady. “If it turns out that our food was the cause, we’ll take full responsibility.”
“But before that, I need you to come with us to the hospital so we can figure out what’s really going on.”
After she finished speaking, Emily saw the girl’s face tighten, just for a split second.
Narrowing her eyes, Emily sensed immediately that things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
Suddenly, the girl doubled over again, clutching her stomach with a fresh round of wailing.
“They’re just making excuses so they don’t have to pay! My stomach hurts so bad I could die, and they don’t care at all!”
“I don’t care what you say—I want a thousand dollars, right now. If you pay me, I won’t ask you for any more medical costs. Just pay up.”
Emily had more than enough money to settle. But she didn’t want to—not like this.
It was obvious the girl was up to something, and Emily wasn’t about to play along just because she demanded it.
If she handed over the money on those terms, then no matter how sincere she tried to be, she’d only be confirming the rumors that there was something wrong with their food.
The girl kept whining, but Emily didn’t flinch. She lazily lifted her gaze.
Out by the school gate, she spotted Amelia Lane, arms crossed, grinning smugly with her little posse behind her.
Emily was about to speak when Elizabeth stepped forward.
“Listen,” Elizabeth said, her tone crisp, “Emily’s already made it clear: if you’ll come to the hospital with us for an exam, we’ll pay for everything, including whatever compensation the law requires.”
“But if you won’t cooperate, we won’t pay anything.”
Emily was struck by how composed Elizabeth sounded. She was starting to show the same sharp, decisive presence she’d had in her previous life.
The girl lifted her pale face, glaring at them.
“What’s the point of going to the hospital? I only ate your food, nothing else—it’s obviously your fault! You just won’t admit it. Who knows if you’ll back out after we get to the hospital?”
She rolled her eyes. “Give me the money first, and then I’ll go with you.”
Emily replied coolly, “Sorry, that’s not going to happen.”
The way Emily and Elizabeth handled the refunds and the situation—direct, decisive—gradually won over the crowd.
