My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 221

Andrew Lane’s voice was, in fact, quite pleasant—more than one friend had joked that if he ever lost his job, he could make a killing as a voice actor, his smooth baritone sure to win him a legion of fans.

But to Alex White, that voice was nothing but an irritation right now.

If Andrew Lane had handled Emily Blair properly, Isabella wouldn’t have had to go through all this in the first place.

So, in Alex’s mind, Andrew was hardly blameless.

Growing impatient, Alex cut Andrew off. “I know what to do. I don’t need your advice.”

He glanced at Isabella Austin, hesitated, then spoke in a low voice. “Isabella needs you more right now. You take her to the hospital—I’ll bring Emily Blair down to the police station.”

Alex shot a warning look at Andrew. “You’d better look after Isabella. Or you’ll answer to me.”

Andrew simply replied, “Okay.”

Only after that brief exchange did Alex become aware of the woman he was gripping by the arm—something wasn’t right. Emily Blair seemed to have gone limp, her whole body slack, head hanging low. Even as he tried to steady her, she slipped lower, her weight almost dragging his arm down.

Alex’s first instinct was suspicion. He figured Emily was just pulling one of her tricks again, trying to wring some sympathy out of him.

He frowned, a cold smile tugging at his lips. “Afraid of the police, Emily? Don’t try to look pitiful. I assure you, you’re going to the station.”

He gave her arm another impatient tug. “Stand up. I’m not here to hold you.”

As he spoke, he started to let go.

That’s when, right before his eyes, Emily Blair collapsed to the floor. Her long, dark hair tumbled forward, hiding her face, her entire body unmoving.

Both men stiffened.

Alex stood where he was, jaw clenched, voice thick with annoyance. “Emily, cut the act. Fainting? That’s the oldest trick in the book—I stopped pretending to faint back in middle school.”

But Emily Blair didn’t respond.

A flicker of uncertainty crossed Alex’s expression. He raised his voice. “Emily! I said, stop pretending you’re dead!”

She just lay there, perfectly still.

Andrew Lane’s eyes darkened, a ripple of concern passing through them.

Alex shot Andrew a look, then strode forward and nudged Emily’s calf with the toe of his shoe. “Emily, what are you trying to pull?”

Still nothing.

Andrew spoke at last. “Something’s wrong.”

He knelt beside her, gently rolling Emily’s shoulder to lift her upper body. Her hair, wet through, slid away from her face, revealing deathly pale cheeks and a vivid handprint.

Emily’s eyes were shut tight, lips bloodless. She didn’t make a sound.

Andrew’s brow furrowed. He shook Emily’s limp body, voice dropping to a grave murmur. “Emily. Emily, can you hear me?”

Her arms dangled uselessly at her sides, her head lolling with the movement, completely unresponsive.

Alex’s eyes widened.

“How is this possible? Isabella’s the one who should be fainting, not her.”

Andrew’s gaze lowered, expression unreadable. “She’s terrified of water. She can’t swim.”

Alex fell silent, caught off guard.

He remembered, just moments ago, when both Isabella Austin and Emily Blair had fallen into the water. Everyone had rushed to save Isabella—Andrew Lane included.
