My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 232

In truth, ever since Andrew Lane wheeled Isabella Austin back to her hospital room and mentioned he needed to go downstairs, a wave of anxiety had been churning in Isabella’s chest.

She hadn’t forgotten—downstairs, Emily Blair was still waiting.

When Andrew guided her back to the room, Isabella’s hands hid beneath the thin blanket, clutching at the fabric on her thighs. She spoke softly to Andrew, voice barely above a whisper.

“Is there something you need to do? Can I come with you? I feel fine, really. I can walk on my own—I won’t slow you down.”

Andrew parked the wheelchair beside the bed and carefully helped her up, his touch gentle. He took the blanket from her lap and tucked her under the heavier quilt.

Only after he’d done all this did he finally answer, “It’s nothing important. I’ll be back soon. Just get some rest.”

Isabella’s eyes had softened at Andrew’s careful movements, but his reply made her faint smile falter.

She forced a smile back onto her lips. “Then don’t be long. I’ll be waiting.”

Andrew leaned over, smoothing the corners of her blanket, murmuring a quiet “Mm.”

From the outside, it would have looked as though Andrew was cradling Isabella in his arms. The scent of him lingered in the air, clean and sharp, and Isabella nearly lost herself in it. She wanted nothing more than to wrap her arms around his waist and bury herself against his chest.

But as soon as he finished tucking her in, Andrew left, and the scent gradually faded with him.

Isabella pressed her lips together, tamping down the feelings swirling in her eyes.

Once Andrew was gone, the room felt even emptier, just her alone in the silence. After the door clicked shut, she waited a few seconds—then couldn’t help herself. She slipped her feet into slippers, tiptoed to the door, and peered through the small glass window.

Even though only a handful of seconds had passed, all Isabella managed to see was the back of Andrew as he walked away—just a glimpse before he disappeared.

Panic flared in her chest. She didn’t bother with the blanket, just flung open the door and hurried after him.

Falling into the river had been her own doing. Though she’d gotten soaked, she wasn’t really injured—she only pretended to be frail for Andrew’s sake, which was why he’d brought the wheelchair.

Now, she moved quickly and quietly down the hallway, intent on finding out what Andrew was up to.

She followed his trail back to the courtyard where she’d run into Emily Blair earlier.

Of course.

Catching sight of Emily’s silhouette, Isabella clenched her teeth.
