My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 293

She said, “Emily, I can tell you’re carrying a lot inside. If you don’t mind, talk to someone around you—don’t keep everything bottled up. That’s not good for your health.”

Emily Blair had imagined a dozen reasons why Arianna George might have come, but this wasn’t one of them. She stared, caught off guard by the gentle concern.

For a moment, Emily didn’t know how to respond.

Arianna gave her shoulder a comforting pat and sighed. “Get some rest, okay? I’ll head out now. If you need anything, just call—”

“Just call me.”

A middle-aged woman in simple clothes appeared in the doorway, carrying two insulated containers and wearing a warm, motherly smile.

Emily blinked at her. “And you are?”

The woman set the containers down on the nightstand, already unpacking them as she spoke. “Mr. Lane hired me to take care of you, Ms. Blair. Just call me Shirley. I’ll be coming by every day for a while, bringing you fresh meals and soup, tailored to what you need to get better.”

Andrew Lane?

Emily’s brow creased.

Shirley opened the containers, filling the small table with a steaming bowl of chicken soup and a selection of nourishing dishes—everything looked delicious and inviting.

Shirley picked up a fork and held it out to Emily, her smile gentle. “Here you go, Ms. Blair. Eat while it’s hot. It won’t taste as good once it gets cold.”

Emily didn’t take the fork. She turned her face away, her voice cool. “No, thank you. Please take it all back. And tell Andrew Lane I don’t need a caretaker.”

Shirley’s smile faltered. She drew her hand back, clasping it nervously in front of her. “Have I done something wrong, Ms. Blair? Or is the food not to your liking? I can always make something else.”
