The woman’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You must be mistaken. Look again—really look. My son’s skin is so red, how could he possibly be fine? And that woman poured so much hot water on him; he was crying so hard. There’s definitely something wrong. Check him again, properly this time.”

As she spoke, her gaze toward the nurse grew sharp and suspicious.

“Aren’t you just a nurse? Can you even tell what’s wrong? If you can’t, get a real doctor over here. I don’t need you.”

There was no way she was going to let the nurse declare her son unharmed—if nothing was wrong, she couldn’t squeeze compensation out of that woman for her son’s “medical bills.”

The nurse, though her professionalism was being questioned, remained polite. “Your son’s burn isn’t serious. If you’re really worried, you can buy some burn ointment and apply it for a few days. It’s not expensive, and he’ll be fine.”

Emily Blair watched the scene play out, her expression cool and detached. The woman caught sight of Emily’s face and grew even more agitated.

Her voice shot up an octave. “What’s wrong with you? I already told you my son is badly hurt—are you blind? Can’t you see how hard he’s crying?”

Right on cue, the little boy joined in, wailing loudly, though not a single tear rolled down his cheek.

The nurse frowned, her patience thinning.

The woman grabbed the nurse’s shoulder with a rough yank, nearly pulling her off balance. Only the nurse’s quick reflexes kept her upright.

“You nurses are useless,” the woman sneered. “All you know is how to give shots. Get a real doctor to look at him. Don’t waste my time with another nurse—my son needs proper treatment.”

Even the calmest nurse would have lost patience by now. Her voice turned cold. “Go sign in at the front desk if you want a doctor. I have other patients to see.”
