Emily watched as Andrew Lane strode to the hospital room door and pushed it open. Through the narrow crack, she caught a glimpse of Isabella Austin—and the hem of her elegant dress.
She stared at that fluttering hem, her gaze momentarily unfocused.
Emily recognized the brand immediately. It wasn’t just any label; even a plain T-shirt from their collection could cost more than most people’s monthly salary. The price tags were outrageous, almost surreal.
It wasn’t that Emily was some sort of fashion aficionado. When she’d lived with the Lane family, she’d accidentally fallen for that brand at first sight. Afterward, Andrew had instructed his assistants to bring her new pieces from the label on a regular basis.
She’d moved out of the Lane residence months ago, but she still remembered that, when she left, nearly every item in her closet was something Andrew had given her—almost all from that same brand.
Altogether, the value of those clothes could probably buy a luxury penthouse in the heart of the city.
When she’d met Andrew Lane for the first time, he hadn’t yet learned to mask his feelings. Everything he felt played out plainly across his face.
Her first impression? Andrew was the grumpiest person in the entire Lane family, and he seemed to resent her presence more than anyone else.
Emily hadn’t dared look at his expression, keeping her head down as she followed Kevin Lane, who guided her through the introductions to every family member.
She’d been so nervous her palms were sweating, fingers trembling as she tried to keep her composure. Her heart thundered so loudly she worried everyone in the room might hear it.
Aside from Andrew’s sullen face and Amelia Lane’s utter lack of warmth, everyone else greeted her with kind smiles and returned her greeting, even offering small welcome gifts.
Emily accepted each one with delight, bowing and thanking them, almost giddy with relief.
