The moment Emily picked up, the head of student affairs launched into a tirade, his booming voice crackling through the line. He was a middle-aged man, loud and quick-tongued, and right now he sounded downright furious.

“Emily Blair, have you seen what’s happening? Because of your personal issues, our entire school is being harassed! Since yesterday, the phones haven’t stopped ringing. People are calling in to curse out the principal, the teachers, the students—even the parents are getting dragged into this mess!”

“Some of your classmates have already gotten harassing calls. Right now, our office phone won’t stop. There’s a pile of complaints from parents and students. They’re saying if we don’t do something soon, they’ll take it up with the school board. You need to think about how you’re going to fix this.”

“I don’t even know how these people got everyone’s contact info! And you—get yourself back to school. You need to sit down with us and figure out how to handle this. Don’t just hide and hope it goes away. This started because of you, and you can’t expect your teachers and classmates to take the fall.”

He kept talking, his words rising and falling, relentless. Emily listened in silence, her eyes lowering, hands clenching the blanket on her lap.

When he finally stopped, he let out an exasperated sigh. “Emily Blair, don’t just sit there. Say something.”

Emily parted her lips and spoke quietly. “I understand.”

His voice shot up, sharp and impatient. “You ‘understand’? Is that all? Be in the principal’s office at three this afternoon. We need to have a serious discussion. If you don’t show, we’ll handle things our own way.”

Emily’s reply was heavy. “Okay. I’ll be there.”

There was a brief pause on his end, then he added, “You should be grateful, Emily. If this was another school, you’d be expelled without so much as a conversation. You should appreciate that we’re even willing to talk with you.”
