Her fingers numb, Emily tapped across her phone screen, adding number after number to her blocked list. After hanging up on yet another incoming call, she dialed Ms. Carter.
Emily knew it was already past lunch, and anyone napping would be awake by now.
Usually, when she called, Ms. Carter picked up almost immediately. But this time, Emily waited until the line was about to disconnect before Ms. Carter finally answered.
Ms. Carter’s voice was as gentle as ever. “Emily, is something wrong?”
“Ms. Carter, I’m outside the school gates. The doors are locked—I can’t get in.”
The school provided dorms for teachers; Ms. Carter usually spent her lunch break there before heading home in the evenings.
After Emily’s call, Ms. Carter arrived, woke the security guard, and got the gates unlocked.
Ms. Carter’s brow furrowed as she took Emily gently by the wrist, leading her into a quiet hallway corner. Her tone was low and serious.
“Your foot’s in a cast—what happened? You’re injured; why aren’t you at home resting? And what are you doing at school? You realize people have been asking about you nonstop lately? The administration is not happy, Emily. Showing up now, do you really want them to think you’ve been expelled?”
Emily opened her mouth, but Ms. Carter cut her off. “Listen to me—go home. Wait for things to calm down before you come back. You’re hurt, so it’s perfectly reasonable to stay away for a while. You’re a good student; just keep up with your work at home. Don’t come to school for now. Do you understand?”
