“What are you talking about?”
Neither of them had noticed Xavier Gonzalez slip up behind them. His round, somewhat awkward eyes were fixed on Elizabeth Wilson with an earnest intensity.
“You’re heading to the capital too? Are you really planning to move your grill cart all the way out there? I haven’t gotten tired of your food yet—I still want more.”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes. Emily Blair let out a quiet laugh, then shot Xavier a sidelong glance, her expression unreadable.
This ordinary-looking man would one day become one of Elizabeth’s business partners. Right now, Emily was likely the only one who knew that someday, Xavier’s fortune would exceed a billion dollars.
She pressed her lips together, looking away as if nothing had happened.
But Emily hadn’t forgotten: Xavier had secretly loved Isabella Austin for years.
Before dusk settled, Emily returned home for a while. She found her mother, Emma George, bustling around the kitchen, busy preparing a pot of homemade chicken soup. The house was filled with warmth and the comforting aroma of simmering broth.
Emily stood quietly for a moment, then called softly, “Mom, I’m home.”
Emma jumped, startled, and hurried over, fussing as she guided Emily to the couch. “Oh, sweetheart, sit down, sit down. Why aren’t you resting in the hospital? Did the doctor say you could come home already?”
Emily smiled gently. “The doctor said I could be discharged today. You don’t have to worry, Mom.”
Emma shot her a look of exasperation. “Even if you’re home, you still need to take care of yourself. No running around! Sit right here—I’ll go check on the soup.”
