Emily Blair used to never dare meet his gaze, but now, she held her head high and looked him squarely in the eyes. Calm and composed, she matched his posture and spoke to him as an equal—an air of confidence and dignity had replaced the insecure, pitiful girl she used to be. She could now analyze pros and cons with him, negotiate on her own terms, and not a trace remained of her old timidity.
Kevin Lane let out a low, humorless chuckle. “Honestly, if your family were on the same level as Andrew’s, I might have given you a chance with him. Who knows, maybe you’d be the one getting engaged to Andrew now, not Isabella Austin.”
At the mention of Isabella Austin, Kevin’s eyes narrowed.
He’d heard all about the recent drama between Emily Blair and Isabella, courtesy of his subordinates. As for Isabella’s behavior, he couldn’t say he was pleased—in fact, he was more than a little disappointed.
He understood Isabella’s eagerness to push Emily out of the picture, but she’d been far too hasty, leaving a trail of sloppy mistakes that forced Andrew to step in and clean up her mess. She’d stirred up such a commotion, it was impossible to ignore. That wasn’t what he’d intended at all.
Kevin had chosen Isabella as Andrew’s future wife because her family’s influence could help Andrew and the Lane family. She was supposed to be a partner, a support—not another problem for Andrew to solve after a long day at work.
The more Kevin observed Emily’s actions, the more he found himself approving. She was cool-headed, determined, and never ingratiating. Once she set her sights on a goal, she never let go. In fact, her attitude and methods reminded him a great deal of Andrew himself—although she was younger and perhaps not squeaky clean, which had allowed Isabella to find leverage against her and make a fuss.
Truth be told, if family background was taken out of the equation, Kevin would have preferred Emily. She might not have the pedigree, but she had ability—enough to barely qualify as Andrew’s equal.
But life didn’t work like that. Isabella’s family was in a completely different league; the help they could offer Andrew and the Lanes was something Emily could never hope to match, no matter how hard she tried.
Besides, the woman Andrew loved was Isabella, not Emily.
It simply wasn’t meant to be.
