My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 397

It was his own room, but he hadn’t actually slept in the bed. Instead, Andrew Lane had dozed off sitting up against the headboard, one leg stretched out on the floor while the other was bent on the mattress. His head had been leaning awkwardly against the wall all night, which explained the stiff, aching pain in his neck this morning.

He took a moment to collect himself, waiting for his mind to clear.

Looking down, he saw Isabella Austin still fast asleep, her hand wrapped tightly around his beneath the covers.

One of his arms was trapped in the cocoon of blankets. He moved it carefully, trying to ease it free without waking her.

A few hours earlier, no amount of gentle coaxing could persuade Isabella to let go of his hand; she’d insisted he stay by her side. Exhausted from a night of running around, he’d given in and let himself drift off sitting right there.

Now, her grip had loosened considerably. He managed to withdraw his hand without disturbing her, and she continued sleeping peacefully.

Andrew stood by the bed, rubbing his brow to chase away the remnants of sleep. He reached for his phone and glanced at his messages. The most prominent was from Kevin Lane:

[Come back to the Lane Estate when you’re up. I need to talk to you.]

He typed a quick reply with his long, slender fingers: [Okay.]

After responding to a few work messages, he headed to the bathroom down the hall to freshen up.

By the time he finished breakfast, Isabella still hadn’t woken.

He turned to the housekeeper and instructed, “Warm her breakfast up when she wakes.”

The housekeeper smiled. “Of course, sir. You’ve already reminded me several times.”

She thought to herself that the lady of the house was expecting, and lately she’d been sleeping much more, rarely waking before ten. Mr. Lane had given the same instruction over and over, but by now, she’d memorized Isabella’s routine—breakfast would always be ready for her, no exceptions.
