After the teacher left, Maxwell Perez picked up the spare lunchbox on the table and said to Emily Blair, “Your mother’s gone home, so I’m guessing she didn’t leave you any lunch. Eat something before you get back to work. I’ll pause your exam timer—lunchtime doesn’t count against you.”
Without a second thought, Emily shook her head. “I’ll finish my essay first. I’m almost done.”
Maxwell didn’t push her. He chewed his food mechanically, barely tasting it, his eyes fixed on Emily’s quick, steady movements.
That afternoon, as the other students began their science exam, Emily started on hers as well.
At first, Maxwell watched in disbelief as her pen flew across the page. But gradually, his shock gave way to a stunned sort of acceptance—almost as if this was how things were supposed to be.
Emily, as always, finished well ahead of time. She breezed through the final English section, scribbling down the last answer in record time.
When she set her pen down, she rolled her aching wrist and massaged her stiff shoulders and neck. Finally done. She felt like she’d been glued to the chair for hours, her fingers raw from writing.
Maxwell walked over from behind his desk, collecting her answer sheet and test booklet. He gave them a quick once-over, then said, “You’re free to go. Once the teachers have graded everything and tallied the scores, we’ll let you know.”
He handed her a slip of paper. “Write your name and contact information here.”
Emily took it and jotted down her details without hesitation.
“Well then, Principal, I’ll be waiting for your good news,” she said with a grin.
Maxwell took the paper as she turned to leave, not noticing the complicated look that crossed his face as he watched her go.
