My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 409

After a moment, Maxwell Perez finally mustered the courage to speak. "How about you come to class every other day?"

Emily Blair sniffled, on the verge of tears again.

Maxwell hesitated, then offered, "…Or maybe every third day?"

Her tears started to fall.

He tried again, "…Or every fourth day? Fifth?"

Emily covered her face with her hands and sobbed even louder.

Desperate, Maxwell glanced around for support from the other teachers, who all seemed suddenly fascinated by the ceiling, the doorway, or the view outside—anywhere but Maxwell himself.

His face twisted through a rainbow of conflicted emotions.

Eventually, he let out a long sigh. "Fine. We’ll do it your way. But if you don’t get the top score on the next mock exam, you’ll have to come back to school immediately."

He added sternly, "And after this, no more tears to get your way. I won’t be making any more exceptions."

At last, Emily broke into a smile, nodding eagerly. "Okay!"

She left the rest of the enrollment paperwork to the teachers and walked out of the school, dabbing at imaginary tears, her spirits soaring.

As she stepped outside, she ran into Elizabeth Wilson, who had just arrived. Noticing Emily’s red-rimmed eyes, Elizabeth shot up from the planter where she’d been sitting and frowned. "Who upset you?"

Emily chuckled. "No one."

She explained the whole story, and Elizabeth’s worried expression eased as she shook her head. "They really picked the wrong person to argue with, didn’t they?"

By "they," she meant Maxwell and the other teachers.

"Come on," Emily said, tugging Elizabeth’s arm and heading for the nearest subway station.

Elizabeth hurried to keep up. "Are you sure about this? I mean, the entrance exam is coming up. Won’t skipping classes mess up your chances?"

Emily raised an eyebrow. "Don’t worry, I’ve got it under control."

Elizabeth gave her a skeptical look, then smacked her lips. "Alright, just don’t come crying to me if it all goes sideways."

Emily laughed softly. "I don’t think it will."

Her second chance at life had changed a lot, but surely not enough to alter the actual test questions.

Elizabeth shook her head. "You never know. The stuff that happens to you is just unreal."

Emily’s smile faltered for a second, but Elizabeth quickly waved her hands. "Alright, I’ll stop, I’ll stop. Let’s go."
