My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 426

Emily Blair lowered her head, pressing her palm to her forehead. “Mom, it’s really not what you think. It’s all a huge misunderstanding. I don’t have any feelings for him—don’t listen to what people are saying. Besides, I have the entrance exams coming up. There’s no way I’d even consider something like that right now…”

Emma George smiled warmly. “If you don’t like him, then why did you practically run to the hospital with him when he was sick? And why did you come home so late? Are you sure you aren’t just embarrassed? I’m your mom, you know. There’s nothing to be shy about. You can talk to me about anything. As for your entrance exams, I know you’ll do just fine. So, if you want to date, go ahead. It’s okay, I’m not going to stop you.”

Emily stared at her, lost for words. “…What?”

She groaned, defeated. “Why are you talking nonsense like everyone else? I swear there’s nothing between us. It’s complicated—I can’t even explain it all right now. But seriously, I have zero interest in him.”

Emma eyed her with suspicion. “Really? None at all?”

Emily nodded, determined. “None. Please, just don’t overthink it.”

But Emma didn’t look convinced. She narrowed her eyes. “Then why did you bang your head against the wall after he turned you down?”

Emily opened her mouth, her eyes troubled and conflicted. The situation at the time was so tangled, she couldn’t even sort out her own feelings. After a moment, she tried, “I—”

Emma cut her off gently. “It’s alright. If you like him, you like him. I don’t mind if you want to date, sweetheart, I just don’t want to see you hurting yourself over it. Do you understand? Promise me you won’t do that again. You’ve got such a good head on your shoulders.”

Emily just stared, speechless. The more she tried to explain, the deeper the misunderstanding seemed to get.

To Emma, to Tristan Davis, to Isla—everyone seemed convinced she had feelings for Tristan. At this rate, not even a sworn affidavit would clear her name.

Emma looked like she wanted to say more, but Emily stood up abruptly, heading for her bedroom. “Mom, please, can we not talk about this anymore? I need some time to myself.”
