Ms. Carter’s words came out soft and hesitant. “Emily, you remember how the school invited you to play piano at our upcoming anniversary celebration?”
Here it comes.
Emily Blair lowered her gaze, her voice steady. “Yes, I remember.”
Ms. Carter continued, “The school’s official reasoning is that with graduation exams coming up, you should focus on your studies. So they’ve decided to cancel your performance, to give you more time to prepare.”
Sitting at the edge of her bed, Emily understood immediately. “They found someone else to perform, didn’t they?”
Ms. Carter hesitated. “...Yes. I know you’ve been preparing for months, and I did try to fight for you. But this was a decision from the top, and there wasn’t much I could do. Just focus on your studies, okay? There will be plenty of chances to perform in the future, and if something suitable comes up, I’ll reach out to you.”
Emily’s voice was gentle. “I understand, Ms. Carter. Really, it’s alright. Let’s leave it at that.”
Ms. Carter clearly hadn’t expected her to give in so easily. “Oh… You don’t want to try and push for it?”
Emily gave a faint smile. “No need.”
She already knew—the school had chosen Isabella Austin and Andrew Lane for a piano duet.
Andrew Lane had donated both a library and a classroom building to the school, along with a scholarship fund. He was one of the school’s most honored alumni.
The idea for the duet had come from Isabella; Andrew Lane would never have refused her.
In her previous life, Emily hadn’t understood. She’d gone straight to the principal’s office, demanding to keep her performance slot. To her surprise, the school had quickly agreed.
Later, she found out that the school had already consulted Isabella first, and it was Isabella who’d given permission for Emily to perform.
But then Isabella sabotaged the piano Emily had borrowed from the Lane family, and when Emily played at the anniversary, her music was a mess—discordant and embarrassing—especially compared to the magical duet from Isabella and Andrew. She felt utterly humiliated.
To make things worse, Isabella stirred things up online, painting Emily as the pathetic clown stuck between the golden couple. The school questioned her, too.
This time, Emily decided to step aside. She’d “let” Isabella have the spotlight.
Their four-hands duet would be a brand new piece—one that hadn’t even been made public yet.
