Just as Emily and Daisy were being thrown out of their cramped apartment by the landlord, Andrew Lane appeared.
He offered her a job as a cleaner at the I&A building—her only option left.
The building was thirty-three stories tall, with dozens of janitors. But under Andrew Lane’s instruction, the others offloaded all their work onto her.
Every day, Emily had to clean all thirty-three floors herself. By the end of each shift, her back ached, her legs and arms trembled constantly, and she barely had time to look after Daisy.
Even so, her monthly paycheck was a mere two thousand dollars. No health insurance, no benefits, no paid leave.
Andrew Lane made it clear: if she didn’t like it, she could leave. But in this city, she had nowhere else to go.
Emily gritted her teeth and worked at I&A for a whole year, until finally, she was kicked out by Isabella Austin for leaving the floors “not clean enough.”
Now, staring up at the building, Emily’s body trembled uncontrollably, as if the fear was etched deep in her soul—impossible to erase.
She never wanted to set foot in this place again.
But Ms. Carter was kind to the core. She didn’t deserve to suffer for Emily’s sake.
Staring at her phone, at the unanswered calls, Emily clenched her jaw and walked inside.
She barely made it past the lobby when the receptionist stopped her.
“Ms. Blair, sorry, may I ask who you’re here to see?”
Emily glanced around at the all-too-familiar layout, her mind drifting for a moment. “I’m here to see Andrew Lane.”
The receptionist’s eyes flicked over Emily’s plain clothes. Sharing a knowing, contemptuous look with her colleague, she gave a thin smile.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Blair. Mr. Lane said he expected you might show up. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want to see you, and he specifically told us not to let you inside. So you’ll have to leave.”
No doubt, they thought she was just another desperate woman trying to latch onto someone powerful.
Emily didn’t bother arguing. She pushed past them.
“Hey, Ms. Blair, you can’t go in! Ms. Blair!”
“Ms. Blair.”
The elevator that led straight to the executive offices slid open. Andrew Lane’s assistant stepped out, smiling politely.
