My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 76

She spoke softly, almost in a whisper. “I didn’t do anything—just found someone.”

Ms. Carter didn’t buy it. She pressed, her voice tight, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything?”

Emily Blair’s hand tightened around the corner of the table as she forced a smile. “Really, nothing. You don’t have to worry about me—I’m fine.”

Ms. Carter kept probing for a while longer, but Emily didn’t let anything slip. Only after they hung up did Emily finally put her phone aside.

She turned to her mother. “It’s late, Mom. You should get some rest.”

Emma George, still anxious, shook her head. “At least let’s take care of those wounds first. We don’t want them getting worse.”

Emily was about to nod when the doorbell suddenly rang.

She clutched the blanket tighter around herself and asked Emma to get the door.

With her back to the entryway, Emily just listened as her mother’s voice rang out, surprised and barely masking her anger. “You’re Mr. Lane’s assistant?”

The assistant replied, his tone businesslike, “Mr. Lane sent me to bring some medicine. It’s all for Ms. Blair.”

Emily, still seated on the couch, turned her head to look. This wasn’t the same assistant who’d driven her to the Moonlight Club earlier; this one was all professionalism, neither warm nor cold toward her.

He handed the bag of medicine to Emma, his voice steady. “Please take it.”

Emma, still seething at Andrew Lane, had no desire to accept anything from him. But with no real medicine in the apartment, she hesitated.

Emily turned away, her voice flat. “Take it, Mom.”

Now wasn’t the time to provoke Andrew Lane. With a single word, he could crush her—or Ms. Carter—for good. For now, she had to play along, even if every instinct rebelled.

Emma snatched the medicine with a huff and locked the door behind the assistant. “Emily, come on. Let’s get you patched up.”
