Chapter 22

Evelyn stood by the floortoceiling windows in the office corridor, her phone pressed to her ear, her eyes filled with exhaustion.

After leaving early to attend the Carter family’s charity gala, her design draft had mysteriously

disappeared from her officeonly to show up at another company the next day.

For days she had been overwhelmed and frantic. Simon had been running around trying to help her, and today, he finally brought good news.

The patent’s been filed,Simon told her. Your design is now protected internationally. No one

can steal it again.

As for the leak,he continued, it was the Roscente Group’s project manager. He refused to say who ordered him, but a large sum of money showed up in his family’s accountdirectly from

Roscente Group. He’s been dealt with.

He paused, then added apologetically, “I’ll be out of town for a few days. There’s an urgent project

in Berlin that I need to handle myself.

No problem. You focus on your work.Evelyn smiled faintly. Thank you, really.

Simon chuckled softly. When I get back, I’ll take you to that new restaurant I mentioned.

After hanging up, Evelyn turned around, only to find herself blocked by a tall figure.

Matthew stood in front of her, eyes bloodshot, suit wrinkled like he’d rushed over. The madness in his eyes was no longer masked.

Evelyn, we need to talk.

She stepped back, her tone flat. Mr. Roscente, I’m working.

Working? He gave a low, bitter laugh. You didn’t seem too busy when you were chatting with

Simon just now.

Evelyn frowned, not wanting to engage. She turned to leave, but he grabbed her wrist.

What do I have to do for you to forgive me?His grip tightened, making her wince slightly. His voice cracked with desperation.

I’ll give you Roscente Group. I’ll give you my life. Isn’t that enough?

Evelyn yanked her hand away, disgust flashing in her eyes. Matthew, I don’t want any of that. What I wantedyou can’t give me anymore.

Matthew’s breath caught. The fury and madness in his eyes finally exploded.

Fine,he hissed. If that’s how it is, don’t blame me.

The stench hit her first. Before she could react, a sharp chemical smell overwhelmed her senses.

She instinctively held her breath, but it was already too late.

Her vision blurred. She stumbledthen caught a final glimpse of Matthew rushing to hold her.

Disoriented, she felt herself being carried away. Footsteps echoed around her, along with Matthew’s deep voice. Move, now. Straight to the airport.

Evelyn kept her eyes closed, digging her fingernails into her palm to stay conscious.

He carried her through the parking garage and laid her gently in the back seat.

Drive fast,he told the driver. We can’t miss the flight.

As the car raced toward the airport, she could feel his fingers lightly stroking her cheek, the touch

laced with a morbid obsession.

Evelyn, let’s go home. We’ll start over

She stayed still, her breathing steady, pretending to be unconscious.

The airport announcements grew louder as he carried her toward the gate. But just before security,

several officers stopped him.

Mr. Roscente, please step aside. One officer held out a badge. We received a report that you may

be involved in an unlawful abduction.

Matthew’s expression didn’t change, but he instinctively held Evelyn tighter.

You’re mistaken. She’s my wife. She’s just feeling unwell.

Is that so?Simon appeared from behind the officers, his gaze fixed on Evelyn. Then why is she

unconscious?

Matthew stared at him in disbelief, about to argue, when Evelyn suddenly let out a quiet whimper. She slowly opened her eyes and began struggling weakly.

Helphe kidnapped me

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was just enough for everyone around them to hear.

The officers immediately stepped forward, pulling her safely away. Evelyn stumbled toward Simon,

pale and shaken.

Are you alright, Ms. Winston?one officer asked with concern.

Evelyn nodded and pulled a document from her bag. This is proof he installed surveillance in my home. I’ve known he was watching me. I was going to report him today, but then he

Matthew stood frozen, watching their perfect coordination unfold. Realization finally sank in.

Youyou planned this together?

Evelyn looked him in the eye, her expression calm at last.

Matthew, you’re far too arrogantyou thought everything was in your control.

Pain and disbelief swirled in his eyes. You really won’t give me one last chance?

I gave you more chances than you deserved, she said, her voice cold. You destroyed every single

one.

Matthew opened his mouth, but no words came out.

The police stepped in, snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

Mr. Roscente, you are under arrest for unlawful detention and invasion of privacy. Please come
