Chapter 6
By the time Nora was released from the sack the next morning, she had already passed out cold.
When the butler went to report, Chase was carefully dabbing ointment onto the tiny puncture on Camila’s
arm.
“She passed out?” Chase’s expression hardened instantly. He set the medicine down and rushed outside.
Camila bit her lip, a flicker of malice flashing across her face before she followed.
Nora lay crumpled on the ground, her skin covered in dozens of tiny, blood–specked bite marks. Chase was stunned, about to speak–when Camila gasped behind him.
“Ow… the spot where I got pricked still stings like hell…”
Distracted, Chase turned back to examine her arm again. “Are you feeling any better, Camila?”
She nodded, tears brimming in her eyes.
“I’m sure Nora didn’t mean to hurt me… maybe she just felt upset seeing you treat me so well.
It’s okay. I won’t hold it against her.”
Chase’s expression grew colder. The flicker of sympathy he’d briefly felt for Nora vanished.
“She made the first move. So what if she passed out? Splash her with cold water–once if she doesn’t wake up, twice if needed. If it takes ten buckets, then she’s faking it!”
The butler nodded and began dumping water on her.
One bucket…
Two buckets…
Three buckets…
It wasn’t until the seventh bucket that Nora finally stirred. She opened her eyes, dazed, her head pounding.
Chase let out a cold laugh. “What? Done pretending? You almost had me fooled, you know.”
Camila whispered, “She probably figured if she kept faking, the act would fall apart.
Nora had never felt this angry in her life.
For a moment, her sadness was gone–only hatred remained
She used every ounce of strength to force herself upright, staggering step by step toward them.

Now
Chase looked over, impatient–then paused.
Something about Nora’s gaze stopped him.
It wasn’t the longing she used to have when she looked at him.
Now, her eyes were lifeless–flat and still, like a dead sea.
Chase suddenly felt… uneasy.
“Nora, listen to me-”
Her knees buckled.
The world spun.
She collapsed to the ground again.
Nora was rushed to the hospital.
Doctors discovered extensive internal and external injuries, along with a high fever. She had to be admitted
immediately.
“Her condition is critical. She needs complete rest. No emotional stimulation whatsoever,” the doctor
warned Chase before walking out.
Over the next few days, Chase stayed by Nora’s bedside, never leaving.
Camila came a few times but, seeing Chase so distraught, clenched her jaw and walked away.
After two full days and nights, Chase finally got a panicked call from one of the bodyguards:
“Mr. Whitmore! Bad news–Miss Rae’s been taken!”
When Chase arrived, Camila had just been rescued.
She flung herself into his arms, crying.
“Chase, I almost didn’t make it… I really thought I’d never see you again…”
Chase patted her back comfortingly, his face cold as he turned to the man pinned to the ground by the
guards.
“Who sent you?”
The thug grunted, “Professional ethics. I can’t reveal who hired me.”

A moment later, his leg was snapped.
Chase’s voice turned glacial.
“Refuse again, and I’ll break the other one.”
The thug screamed through clenched teeth.
“A woman–Nora Langston! She hired me herself!”
“What?!” Camila’s eyes widened in shock.
“No way! Nora would never–she may not like me, but she’s not that cruel…”
The thug spat viciously.
“She said you stole her husband, right?
She told me to ruin you―said once I did, her man wouldn’t want you anymore!”
Chase’s expression turned ice–cold.
Without another word, he picked Camila up and stormed off, fury radiating from every step.
Behind his back, Camila threw the thug a quick, knowing glance.
At the hospital, Chase burst into Nora’s ward, dragged her out of bed, and threw her to the ground.
“Nora Langston, you’re vile!”
The shock of the cold floor woke her up. She blinked. “What… what’s going on?”
