My Maternity Records Belong to Another Woman novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

When Evelyn opened her eyes again, Matthew was sitting by her bedside. The moment he saw her

awake, he leaned forward and took her hand, his voice full of concern.

Evelyn, thank God. You’re finally awake.

Matthew?

I’m sorry,he said gently. I was in a meeting and missed your call.

His brow furrowed. Those nurses have already been fired. I promise, nothing like that will ever happen again.

Evelyn stared at him quietly, saying nothing.

Matthew looked a little awkward. He tucked the blanket around her, said a few comforting words, then stood up.

There’s something I have to take care of at the office. You rest up. I’ve already spoken with the doctors. You’ll be fine now, and this won’t happen again.

He leaned down and kissed her forehead before leaving the room.

Evelyn’s fingers trembled slightly as she watched him walk away.

He didn’t even have time to speak with her for more than a few minutes.

After several days in the hospital, Evelyn was finally cleared to go home.

Just as she walked through the door, she heard laughter coming from the living room. Matthew’s mother, Haley, was gently cooing at the baby..

Kent, look! Do you know who this is? That’s your mommy,

Evelyn paused, then looked up.

))

Haley was holding the baby, smiling as she showed him a phone screen- and on the screen was clearly a photo of Lila.

Hearing footsteps, Haley turned and saw Evelyn. Her smile vanished instantly.

Oh, you’re back?

She looked Evelyn up and down with clear disdain.

You were in the hospital for days. Must be nice living like a queen, Matthew’s been working

nonstop, and you just lie around in bed like royalty.

You were nothing but a poor nobody before. If it weren’t for Matthew, do you think you’d ever see the inside of a private hospital room?

It was the doctor who

Haley cut her off with a snort. Enough. Now that you’re back, don’t sit around. Matthew’s appetite hasn’t been great lately. Go to the office and bring him lunch.

Evelyn lowered her eyes. She didn’t argue. She simply nodded.

An hour later, she arrived at Matthew’s company carrying a lunchbox.

As she opened the door, she saw a woman standing in front of Matthew’s desk. She wore an oversized mask that covered most of her face and held a stack of documents.

When the woman turned at the sound of the door, her eyes curved slightly, full of smugness.

Hello, Mrs. Roscente.

Evelyn’s gaze sharpened. She recognized Lila immediately.

What are you doing here?

I’m just delivering documents,Lila said lightly. You’re not going to meddle in that too, are you?

She took a few steps closer, her voice low and taunting.

Matthew’s been so busy lately. If you really care about him, maybe spend more time with him instead of being suspicious of everything all the time

Evelyn ignored her and placed the lunchbox on the desk, turning to leave.

But Lila suddenly grabbed her arm. Her voice turned pitiful.

I know you don’t like me, Mrs. Roscente, but I really am just here for work

Before she could finish, she yanked Evelyn’s hand and flung the hot soup from the table onto herself.

The boiling liquid soaked her blouse. Angry red blotches bloomed instantly across her skin.

Ah!Lila cried out, her eyes welling with tears.

The door burst open. Matthew stormed in, eyes darting between them.

What happened?

Lila bit her lip, her voice trembling. II shouldn’t have come. I upset her. I’m sorry

She glanced at Evelyn, looking utterly terrified.

But Matthew brushed past her and grabbed Evelyn’s hand.

Did you get burned?

His voice was tense. He turned toward Lila, his expression darkening.

I told you to let the assistant handle deliveries. Get out.

Lila’s eyes reddened, and she looked at him with hurt, but said nothing. She turned and walked

away.

Once she was gone, Matthew sighed.

Evelyn, I had no idea she’d be so rude as to barge in like that. It won’t happen again.

He hesitated before continuing. I love you. I’d never do anything to betray you. But

trust me too. Please don’t lash out at someone innocent.
