My Maternity Records Belong to Another Woman novel Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Evelyn didn’t stay to watch the overly affectionate charade between the two. She turned and walked

away.

Back home, she unlocked her phone and checked the progress of her immigration paperwork in just a few days, everything would be finalized.

She began packing. All necessary documents, clothes, and personal items were neatly folded and stored. Everything else was thrown out. She placed the gift box she had prepared earlier right in the

middle of the table.

When Matthew returned and opened the door, he immediately sensed something was off.

The house felt emptier. Decorations that once lined the shelves were gone, and part of the wardrobe had been cleared out. A wave of unease swept through him.

Evelyn,he asked, why is there so much missing?

She didn’t even look up. They were outdated. I’m replacing them.

His

eyes

landed on the box on the table. What’s this?

A surprise I prepared for you,she said calmly. But you’ll have to wait a few days before open it.

Matthew hesitated, then nodded without pressing further. After a pause, he added, There’s a family dinner tonight. Evelyn, come back to the estate with me.

Evelyn looked up at him, reading his expression. She knew she couldn’t refuse. Silently, she nodded

and followed him out.

The Roscente family estate was brightly lit.

Evelyn stepped inside behind Matthew and looked up to see the living room packed with people his parents, Lila’s parents, and Lila herself, who was cradling the baby while laughing softly. The child giggled in her arms, snuggling close, as if the bond between them had never been stronger.

The sight was like a blade.

Evelyn stood still and slowly turned to Matthew. What is this?

Matthew took her hand gently, a trace of guilt in his voice. Evelyn, the truth about what happened back then has come to light. Youmisunderstood Lila.

He paused, then softened his voice. I know you made a mistake because you loved me too much.

I’m not blaming you. But now that both families know the truth, they’re upset. Just apologize, and we can put this all behind us, alright?

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief. Misunderstood? Are you saying I would risk my dignity to frame

her?

Before Matthew could reply, Haley suddenly slammed the table and stood up, her voice sharp and

cold.

Still denying it? Come over and apologize! Someone has to teach you a lesson today!

Matthew frowned and stepped in front of Evelyn. Mom, we agreed she’d just apologize. That’s enough.

But Evelyn yanked her hand from his. I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize?

Lila, still holding the baby, began to cry softly. Evelyn, you know what really happened. Why won’t you let it go after all these years?

Seeing her daughter’s tearstreaked face, Lila’s mother stormed forward, shoving past Matthew

and landing a stinging slap across Evelyn’s face.

You filthy woman! You ruined my daughter’s reputation and still have the nerve to act innocent?

Someone as lowborn as you is just born to lie!

Evelyn stumbled from the blow. Blood welled at the corner of her mouth. Her eyes scanned the

room and finally landed on Matthew.

You don’t believe me either?

Matthew looked away. As his father called for punishment, he instinctively stepped between them, unsure of what to do. But then Haley’s voice cut through the air.

Matthew! How long are you going to keep protecting her? Evelyn did all those terrible things, hurt Lila for years, and now Lila’s seriously ill because of it! And yet she still gave you a child.

Mom, stop!Matthew quickly interrupted, panic flashing across his face.

He turned to Evelyn, eyes filled with helplessness and disappointment.

Evelyn, I can’t keep indulging you in one mistake after mistake.

Then he stepped aside.
