If Luna proved to be no more than a sharpened blade, Fiona would have to keep her guard high; such steel could turn on her someday.
Yet the question had slipped out sounding perilously like a woman’s jealous itch, and she felt the heat of it even as it cooled on her tongue.
Soren’s features softened, a faint curve tugging at his mouth. “Had I settled on Luna,” he murmured, “you would not be standing beside me now.”
But even that admission carried a deliberately veiled edge; he still refused to lift the curtain on the past.
“I’m curious,” Fiona pressed, meeting his eyes without flinching. “What exactly lies between you and Luna?”
Soren’s smile vanished; a shadow of impatience settled between his brows. A man accustomed to locking trouble in his own chest was never eager to dissect it for another, and Fiona’s question had trespassed over a line not yet erased.
They had not, after all, reached the day when two hearts could lie open on the same table.
“Because she betrayed you once,” Fiona said in a voice as quiet as drifting snow, “and that wound still aches–so you refuse to revisit the past, don’t you, Lord Soren?”
He set the mathematics booklet she had just completed on the low cedar table. For an instant, his eyes studied the neat rows of numbers–cool, measuring. Though he tried for composure, a wintry chill still clung to his face.
Fiona refused to shrink beneath that appraisal. She met his stare head–on, intent on seeing whether he would bend first.
If he did, she would know precisely how far she could tug the reins next time.
Between a man and a woman, desire had always been a silent duel–each maneuvering for the narrowest edge.
He leaned in, his breath grazing the curve of her car. “Trying to map the single boundary I won’t cross for you, aren’t you?” he murmured, voice light yet edged.
“All I want is the story about Luna,” Fiona replied, her smile small and deliberate. “Let me hazard a guess–at first, you considered bringing her into your household. But she tempted you early, sweetness masking another master’s orders. You can tolerate a planted spy at your

Soren’s mouth twisted. “My woman?” he echoed. “That night was the first time between us. On what grounds would you call her mine?”
What the body does and what the heart feels are rarely the same thing, Fiona answered, voice soft but unyielding.
I’m no statue, he said, as cool as frost. “Yes, when I was young I admired her face, but admiration never meant possession.”
Fiona realized his chill was born not of Luna but of her probing. He had shown exactly how much testing he would abide–and no more.
His account of Luna was spare, yet from those scraps she guessed the woman served, for now, purely professional ends.
What the future held, no one could predict.
Still, Fiona suspected feelings would bloom. Soren spent most years far from her, and closeness breeds attachment; share snowstorms long enough and warmth ignites, especially when the woman is lovely.
Sensing the air grow colder, Fiona rose and reached for her heavy cloak. “I should head back,” she said, voice even, as though nothing fragile stirred beneath the calm.
Soren’s brows knit. “Harriet has already left the mountain. How do you plan to descend alone?”
Even that simple question betrayed an unwillingness to let her go.
“It isn’t far. I can walk,” she replied with courteous precision.
Soren held his silence. Fiona unlatched the door of the wooden lodge; wind slashed across her cheeks, raw and stinging.
She drew a long breath and stepped into the white night.
The snow lay shallow yet treacherous. After only two steps her boot skidded, and she landed on a cushioned drift with a muffled thud–more startled than hurt.
She was pushing herself upright when fingers clamped around her wrist–unyielding. She turned to see Soren, his face a storm frozen mid–roar. Before she could protest, he lifted her, carrying her as though she weighed nothing.
He strode back into the wooden lodge and kicked the door shut behind them. She sank onto
