“You are a man who never yields the field,” Fiona noted, her tone half praise, half warning.
“In days to come I will bend–to my wife at least,” Soren replied, a faint smile turning solemn commitment into light jest.
Fiona couldn’t help a quick, slicing laugh. The sound carried more satire than mirth; she knew exactly how generously he treated a wife–she had worn that ring once before. In the life she remembered alone, he had been cold, a kinless madman roaming palace corridors with frost in his veins.
Soren narrowed his eyes, thoughtful. Her laughter sounded too intimate, as though she truly had been his wife. Yet perhaps Xavier’s whispered tales were nothing but smoke; Soren filed away the doubt. Silence stretched between them, each guarding private storms.
Desire flashed through him, hot and sudden, but he refused to startle her. He pivoted toward the clearing. “I’ll practice my sword for a while,” he said, hunger for motion replacing the other hunger.
Fiona lingered inside the lodge long enough to steady her pulse. Moments later she stepped into the crisp mountain air, following the muted ring of steel.
She knew little of swordplay, yet even an amateur could read the language of his blade—the blend of power and precision few men ever mastered.
“Lord Soren, Duke Zonfrillo taught you well; your sword–hand rivals legend.”
“Father was severe when I was young. If I failed to master a lesson within days, punishment waited–military punishment at that.” He spoke of it now without a particle of pain, as though scars had weathered into quiet stone.
“Would it be too difficult for a woman to learn?” she asked, earnest curiosity eclipsing pride.
“With your current grip, you’d never endure the training,” he said, sheathing his sword and approaching. “Even Naomi loves these arts and still abandoned them.”
“If I truly wish to learn, will you at least let me try?”
“Possible,” he conceded after a pause, “but I must craft a method to suit you.” He tapped his chin. “Study with me for a year or two, and you’ll have enough for self–defense.”
The promise called up memories of another lifetime, when he had invented mounted archery drills just to teach her.

“Must it truly take that long?” she murmured.
:
“To master the sword, ten years are scarcely enough. One or two…”

The words caught and stalled. Soren’s gaze slid to her again, expression unreadable, as though a new thought had just drawn his blade to a halt.
He rarely spared strangers more than a cursory glance, yet with Fiona he had shown an almost artisan’s patience, as though she were raw jade worthy of years at the whetstone.
When his thoughts drifted ten years into the future, sharing that stretch of time with her felt not strange but perfectly natural, a quiet certainty that surprised even him.
The training may take a while, Soren murmured after holding his breath for a beat, “but if I stay by your side, the hardship won’t taste half as bitter.”
Fiona lowered her eyes, letting silence settle between them like new–fallen snow.
Soren kept his gaze on her face, waiting, reading every still line of her expression.
“Perhaps we can speak of it another day,” she said after a moment’s thought.
Soren seemed lost in some private corridor of thought. At length he answered with a soft, unhurried “Mm,” and added nothing more.
“The wind is fierce out there. Now that your sword practice is finished, Lord Soren, come inside.” She noticed flakes caught in his hair, glittering like frost on raven feathers.
“All right,” he agreed, the word carried on a visible puff of breath.
Indoors, Fiona had meant to sit alone by the low couch and watch the snowfall. Yet Soren followed, taking his place at her side, close enough for her sleeve to brush his coat.
“You have been here so long, I thought the sight of snow would have bored you by now,” she said lightly. “Besides, this year’s fall is modest–nothing like last winter’s spectacle.”
“Watching it with you feels different,” Soren answered, though the words seemed to carry a burden he did not share.
A man finds everything delightful when he fancies a woman, Fiona told herself. One day the novelty fades, and even sharing a roof becomes a chore.
“It won’t be long before the mathematics examination,” she remarked, letting the subject change like a door swung open to fresh air.

“With all the work you’ve put in recently, you’ll do just fine,” Soren said, conviction steady in his voice.
“And how would you know I’ve worked hard?”
“You always have,” he replied, turning slightly so his eyes met hers. “Among all the ladies, your dedication is second to none.”

It was a trait he had long admired, filed away like a precious note only he could read.
Fiona paused, startled; praise from him was as rare as midsummer hail.
