Celeste brushed her fingers over her bare wrist, her gaze darkening.
Just a few hours ago, she'd been holding that jewelry.
On the way here, she'd already placed the pieces back into their velvet box and handed them to Mack for safekeeping.
Nothing that hadn't entered the Duncan family home.
But how had Herbert found out?
Did the Duncan family really have the means to plant a spy right under Derek's nose at Hopkins Manor?
Her mind was spinning with questions.
Beverly appeared at the top of the stairs and glided down, her voice sharp.
"Dad's absolutely right. Just because Alfred likes you now, doesn't mean you're set for life, sister."
She paused, her eyes glinting. "Alfred can't have children, so you have no real security. That emerald bracelet is worth a fortune. Keeping it with your family as ‘insurance' is the only smart move you've ever made."
Celeste turned at the sound, taking in Beverly's outfit—high-end designer, the latest collection. No way the Duncan family could afford that now.
The truth hit her instantly.
It wasn't the Duncan family who'd planted a spy.
It must have been Jasper, deliberately feeding information to Beverly.
Celeste's lips curled into a cold smile instead of anger. "Idiot."
Beverly's face twisted in outrage. "Who are you calling an idiot?"
"Who else?"
Celeste didn't even bother to stop, rising to her feet and shooting Beverly a frosty glance. "Jasper's using you as a pawn, and you're still counting the money for him."
"I don't know what you're talking about—Jasper—"
Celeste cut her off. "You know exactly what I mean." She grabbed her purse. "Today, they let you snatch the jewelry from me. But in a few days, they'll find a way to take it right back from you."
"Alfred's heirloom will end up in the hands of the eldest grandson's family—exactly as they planned. And you, Beverly, you'll be left with nothing."
"Really?! Congratulations, Mr. Robertson, for landing the Silvercrest Emporium project with the Hopkins family! And you're willing to let Duncan Group join the table? We'll do our absolute best, you have my word!"
He hurried to flatter Philip further. "By the way, do you have time for a meal soon? I'd love to treat you, especially after all you've done for Duncan Group. You're nothing like my ungrateful daughter Celeste—she's always working against her own family—"
But at the mention of Celeste's name, Philip's tone turned icy.
"I'll give you this opportunity, but only if Celeste apologizes to Viola in person."
The line clicked off.
Herbert stared at his phone, his face darkening.
This was all Celeste's fault!
His anger surged again. "Get the car! I'm going to the office!"
The Hopkins Group's partnership with the Robertson Group—this project was the golden ticket everyone in the industry was chasing, and the Duncan family had to get their share.
Whether Celeste liked it or not, she had no choice—she would apologize to Viola for the sake of the Duncan Group.
