“I wouldn’t know.”
Maureen brushed her off.
Elizabeth dropped the act, stung by her coldness: “Maureen, I’m marrying Alex soon. He’ll run the Sutton Family. You should show me more respect, don’t
you think?”
Maureen set down her work. “I really don’t know about Mrs. Gu’s affairs. Since you’re marrying Alex, I suggest you ask him directly if there’s anything you want to know.”
Elizabeth’s expression tightened.
She had asked Alex before–he seemed gentle on the surface, yet revealed nothing privately.
Even now, she couldn’t fathom why he’d agreed to their engagement.
Finding no answers from Maureen, Elizabeth scanned the room for Alex.
Soon she spotted him.
Alex stood towering over the crowd, wineglass in hand, gaze fixed in one direction.
Elizabeth followed his line of sight–Maureen stood arranging flowers there.
A dark suspicion flickered in Elizabeth’s heart.
Only when Alex looked away did she suppress the absurd thought.
How could Alex possibly fancy Maureen? A hearing–impaired married woman.
Back at family gatherings, Maureen had always been the center of attention.
Now with Alex’s engagement, even distant Sutton relatives had arrived early, eager to watch the drama unfold-
partly to see Alex, Geoffrey’s twin brother,
and partly to glimpse Geoffrey himself, now blind.
Maureen didn’t expect Geoffrey to miss the event due to his health, sparing him this embarrassment. Some guests redirected their hostility toward her.

“Ms. Ramirez, fetch me some water,” demanded a society lady.

In the past, Maureen would’ve complied immediately. Now she met the woman with icy detachment: “Do it yourself.”
The lady froze, stunned that the once–obedient woman dared speak to her this way. Not wanting a scene, she summoned a servant instead.
Yet some remained oblivious. Edward had watched Maureen all evening. After his wife Kathleen departed, he approached Maureen with liquor–heavy steps.
“Sister–in–law, these years must’ve been lonely for you?”
Maureen recoiled from the alcoholic fumes, attempting to retreat. Edward pursued relentlessly: “You’re breathtakingly beautiful. My cousin Geoff is truly blind, wasting your virginity like this.
Leaning closer, he whispered: “Choose me, and I’ll cherish you like porcelain.”
If Geoffrey’s eyes were fine, Edward wouldn’t dare flirt with Maureen even with a hundred times the courage.
Honestly, ever since Maureen married Geoffrey, Edward had fancied her at the wedding–she was breathtakingly beautiful.
Now married, she carried an extra allure.
“Edward, show some self–respect.”
Maureen said coldly.
Edward mistook her reserve for shyness and pressed on: “Geoffrey’s useless trash now. He doesn’t deserve you. Be my woman in secret. I’ll treat you right.”
Maureen never expected the Sutton Family to harbor such a creep, saying this to his cousin’s wife during Engagement Party preparations.
She ignored him and walked away.
Edward followed, grabbed her, and started groping.
Others were nearby. Not wanting a scene, Maureen shook him off.
“Get lost!”
Edward snapped: “Stop playing hard to get!

You’re lucky I want you–otherwise you’re stuck with that waste Geoffrey forever!”
The commotion drew onlookers.

Edward is the only one in his generation with a son, deeply favored by the old master. If you cross him, you’ll pay dearly.
Maureen, being a woman, stood no chance against Edward. He pinned her down instantly
This was her worst nightmare–happening in public. Everyone watched the show, nobody lifted a finger.
Alex got called away on business just then.
Returning to the Sutton Family made bringing Justin along awkward.
Edward had been drinking, and seeing nobody dared help Maureen, he pushed further–grabbing at her clothes.
Maureen’s clothes were nearly torn off when figures shoved through the crowd. One kicked Edward flat on the ground.
Edward slammed down hard, clutching his chest in pain.
“Who? Who kicked me?”
A voice that chilled his blood ordered, “Dump him in the river to sober up.”
