Chapter 5 

Sandy came in and scooped me up into her arms, her sharp gaze sweeping over the Bakers. 

“I happened to run into this girl and only now realize how miserable her life is. Even her parents don’t care about her and left her alone in an alley. If you don’t want her, then I’ll raise her.” 

Amanda’s expression changed. “What’s that supposed to mean, Mrs. Sandy?! No matter what happened, Mindy is still my daughter! It’s not your place to interfere, especially when she’s the reason Jade got kidnapped.” 

At that, everyone turned their hateful eyes on me, as if they couldn’t wait to tear me apart. 

Only Sandy touched my face gently and said, “She’s just a child. As for the kidnapping… Maybe you should ask your beloved  daughter.” 

With a wave of her hand, Sandy played a video. 

On the screen, Jade was bossing around two middle–aged men. 

“Do what I told you, but don’t hurt me, understand? Just find a way to swap me for Mindy. You can beat her as much as you want. I want her face ruined, her hands broken. Dump her with the beggars so she’ll become one too!” 

The two kidnappers nodded obediently, clearly following her orders. 

Everyone’s faces turned dark as they stared at the screen in shock. 

Within minutes, Sandy had already tracked down the kidnappers and Jade. She still didn’t get what happened, crying and shouting about being rescued from the kidnapping. 

My parents stayed silent, while Sandy sneered, “So you arranged for your own kidnapping?” 

A  flicker of guilt flashed in Jade’s eyes as she looked pitifully at Amanda. 

However, Amanda just reached out to me and said right in front of her, “Mindy, isn’t this enough? Since Jade’s safe, let’s just drop it this time. Don’t push your luck. Hurry up and come home with us.”
