Chapter 53: Lost
Adrian had hoped. He thought that the look in Noelle’s eyes was pity. That, even after everything, even after all she went through because of him, there was still something left in her heart that felt for him.
So he had taken it as his chance. His only chance.
“N…oelle…” he choked, his voice barely a whisper, already fading with the last of his strength. His entire body was shutting down, the pain, and the exhaustion. But he refused to close his eyes. He refused to look away from her.
“…‘m sorry…” His words came out broken, fragile, nearly swallowed by his sobs. “Please… f–forgive me…”
His head dropped forward slightly, his shoulders shaking, his body convulsing with uneven gasps. “P–please…” he rasped, barely able to form the words past the wreckage of his throat. “I… Inever meant for it to end like this… I never”
A choked sob cut him off. He shook his head frantically, his entire body trembling as the reality of what had happened crashed down on him all over again.
“I–I would have loved them…” he gasped out, his swollen, tear–filled eyes searching hers desperately as if there was still something left to cling to. “I swear, Noelle—I would have loved our baby… I would have protected them… I would have–”
His voice broke.
His head dropped lower, his shoulders caving in as a strangled cry tore from his lips. “I would have been better…” he wept. “I would have done anything to make things right…”
He was breaking, unraveling at the seams, barely able to speak through the thick sobs choking him. “I–I’ll do anything…! Anything you want, Noelle… Just please–please, don’t let it end like this…”
But Noelle had already lost the capacity to feel anything for him.
She had no more sympathy to give.
Her last tears fell in silence as he wept before her, but her heart remained cold, untouched by his suffering. Because as she looked at him—hunched over in that chair, shaking, sobbing, pleading–she realized something that made her stomach twist
violently.
She had been him once.
“Why…” Her voice trembled with suppressed rage. “Why are you begging?!”
Adrian’s breath hitched, his bloodshot eyes widening at the sudden anger in her tone.
Noelle took a step forward as her entire body shook while her hands curled into fists at her sides. “Did you stop when I begged you to?!”
Her voice cracked, but it didn’t matter. The anger, the hurt, the memories of loving a man who had never truly loved her–of trusting him, of believing in him–came crashing down all at once, drowning her in a fury she could no longer contain.
“You’re crying now? You’re begging now? Where was this when I was crying? When I was begging you to stop?”
Adrian shook his head frantically, tears streaming down his battered face as he struggled against his restraints. “N–Noelle, please,” he sobbed, his voice breaking. “I know, I know! I was wrong! But please…give me another chance…I… I’ll forgive you… for running away from me… I’ll even forgive you about our child…” He added, selfishly thinking that he really lost his first child.
But his desperate, insensitive words only fueled the fire inside her.
She let out a sharp, bitter laugh, but it was humorless and filled only with raw, unfiltered pain. “You’re a lunatic… I should have known…” Her voice wavered, but the fury in her eyes burned. “Do you even know how I felt when I found out I was pregnant?” she spat, her words laced with pure agony. “I wanted to die.”

Adrian flinched as it she had physically struck him, but she didn’t stop.
“I wanted to rip my own body apart just to undo everything you did to me from the start!” she screamed, her vision blurring with fresh tears. “Because all I could think about was you! Your face, your hands
your lies! Every time I looked at myself, I felt
sick!”
Her breath came out ragged, uneven, her body trembling violently as she continued. “You left a mark on my body that I will never forget, and when I look at myself in the mirror, all I see is…you.”
Adrian’s breath hitched but Noelle’s voice only grew louder, more desperate, as the dam she had been holding back finally shattered.
“Do you know what that felt like?” she choked out. “To wake up carrying a part of you inside me? A part of the man who ruined me?! You scarred me for life… Adrian… And that is something I will never forgive.”
Her fists clenched at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. “And as long as this child is inside me, I will remain chained to my past. I will not be able escape it. I won’t be able to breathe without feeling like I was suffocating in everything you’ve put me through.”
Her voice broke as she let out a sharp, shaky breath, pressing a trembling hand against her chest as if she could physically hold herself together. “But I couldn’t…” She paused, gritting her teeth as she harshly wiped her tears away, but they wouldn’t stop falling. “I couldn’t do it.”
“My heart… It couldn’t simply fathom ending an innocent life… I spent nights holding onto my stomach, trying to convince myself that this child deserved love. That maybe if I just ignored the pain, if I just forgot where it came from, I could learn to love
it…” 1:
Her entire body shook as she finally let out the words that had been buried deep in her chest. “I couldn’t. I couldn’t, Adrian. But I have to be inhumane… to be human again… You will never understand… because you’re not a woman…”
“I am mad at you. No. I am furious. I hate you. You took everything from me!..”
She let out a sharp breath. “You turned my life upside down… left it in complete ruin… I was scared to death. Do you hear me? I was scared, scared of what you had done to me, scared of what this child would mean, scared of never being free from you!”
Her breath came out shaky, her head lowering slightly as she choked on her own sobs. “And now… you’re acting like you’re the victim? Begging me for something you never gave me?”
“You don’t get to beg, Adrian.” She said softly, almost patiently. “You don’t get to cry. You don’t get to want something now that it’s already gone.”
However, Adrian barely processed her words as his mind latched onto something else entirely.
“You… you’re still pregnant?” he choked out of disbelief and hope. His gaze locked onto her belly, and for the first time in what felt like eternity, something inside him lit up. Even with his lips split and torn, he managed a trembling, almost delirious smile.
His child, their child… was still there. He was still a father.
But the moment was gone as quickly as it came.
Because then, his eyes caught something else.
Thick, deep red blood was dripping from between her legs and pooling onto the floor beneath her feet.
His stomach lurched violently.
“Noelle!” His voice cracked as panic seized him. “Noelle! You’re bleeding!”
He thrashed against his restraints, struggling with everything he had left, forgetting his own agony in an instant. “Help!! Somebody help! She’s bleeding!!”
Before she could even process what was happening, Noelle collapsed.
