“Kay, this person is very mysterious. All I could find out is that he studied at the same university as you, majoring in Design Science, and he also got into the University of Oxford. Now he’s a professor at the University of Oxford right after graduating.”
My heart was pounding. He and I were once college classmates, but I seemed to not know him at all.
Back then, I was entirely focused on my studies and dating Leland. I didn’t pay attention to anyone else approaching me.
I remembered there was a handsome guy who sometimes passed by my classroom, occasionally brought me a milkshake, and sometimes watched me from a distance. I still didn’t know who that person was to this day.
After college, I studied Design Science and, with Mary’s help, I got accepted into the University of Oxford. But because Leland didn’t want me to be so exhausted, I gave it up.
Now, thinking back, I regret it. If I had gone to the University of Oxford and returned this year, my life might have been different. I wouldn’t have experienced Leland’s betrayal so early, nor would I have endured his humiliation so soon.
Life couldn’t be replayed. I could only bravely face Leland’s infidelity and Caitlyn’s provocations. Even if he really didn’t love me anymore, it didn’t
matter.
I kept telling myself in my heart,”I’m still me. Kaylie, keep pushing. You’ve got this. As long as you get that agreement signed tomorrow, you’ll be out of here a winner in just three days.”
As soon as I arrived at the company and stepped through the gate, the receptionist, Lorena, approached me with a sympathetic look on her face.
Ms. Perez, you need to stay strong. We all know what’s going on, even though you asked us not to talk about it. Caitlyn can be really vile, especially today with Mr. Pearson backing her up like that. Just remember, you’re always the most amazing woman in our eyes.”
I smiled slightly and patted her arm to comfort her.
