Old Dreams No Return (Serena) novel Chapter 126

Chapter104.

Without missing a beat, I fixed Caitlyn with a level stare. “I’m planning to transfer control of the group to you and Leland. How can I still be considered the heir? That title belongs to you now. You and Leland should be doing the drinking. I’m merely a decoration today.

“Go on, then. Show them how grateful you are. I want to see how you express it. After all, Leland never gave me this chance before. He always brought his little public relations ladies instead.”

A pout settled on my lips, my expression carefully crafted to look wronged and utterly confused.

After all, I was only twenty-five this year, at the peak of my youth. Yet, I’d cut my education short to become Leland’s wife.

It struck me, with painful clarity, that at an age meant for exploration and growth, I should have been delving into the world, expanding my knowledge. Settling into the role of a wife so young felt like a disservice to life, to my own potential.

Caitlyn’s fury flared, stoked by my veiled critique. She pointed a shaking finger at me.”Kaylie, do you really think Leland still loves you? He doesn’t love you anymore!”

I nodded slowly.”You’re right. In fact, it would be best to announce it to everyone tomorrow at the press conference. It would save me the trouble of pretending. And if you ask Mr. Pearson to prepare a divorce agreement, I would be even more grateful.”

Leland downed the remainder of his drink in one swift gulp, his anger palpable.

Ignoring Caitlyn, who was now pressing close, running her hands over him, he addressed Galen.”Mr. Friedman, you said you value Ms. Perez highly. How about this? Let her have a few more drinks with you. A token of our gratitude for your years of cooperation with the Leslie Group. You’re a long-time client; it’s only proper.”

Galen wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, looking distinctly awkward and caught between a rock and a hard place.

But Leland’s command left little room for refusal. He raised his glass, taking a deep breath before draining it.”Ms. Perez, cooperating with the Leslie Group is truly an honor for us. Consider this my toast. Please, drink when you’re ready.”

I offered a faint smile and a slight nod, tilting the glass to take a mere sip.

Caitlyn wasn’t finished.”A sip? You should finish the whole glass, and then toast Mr. Friedman three more times to show your proper gratitude. Ms. Perez, surely you wouldn’t disdain sharing a drink with Mr. Friedman, would you?”
