Chapter119.
Leland’s voice cracked, raw with desperation, “My little princess, please, open the door… Kaylie, please open it. I was wrong. I know I’m wrong.”
Just then, the living room light flickered on. Lara appeared, rubbing her puffy, sleep-heavy eyes. “Mr. Pearson, Ms. Perez said she won’t be returning tonight. She mentioned you’ll understand in the morning and asked you to get some rest first.”
Leland’s agitation mounted. “Where is she? Did she say where she went?”
Lara swallowed hard, a flicker of anxiety and guilt in her eyes. .”Ms. Perez likely stayed with a close friend. She said she would contact you in the morning.”
Leland nodded. “Right… she must be avoiding me. She must be furious. Why would she stay here?
She must be utterly disappointed in me.
I can reach her tomorrow, right?”
Lara gave a reluctant nod, struggling visibly to hold back tears.
Leland sank to the floor, sitting cross-legged before the closed bedroom door.”Okay, I’ll wait here for Kaylie to contact me in the morning. I’ll wait for
her.”
Lara hesitated, then tentatively suggested, “Mr. Pearson, perhaps you should go back to your bedroom and get some sleep. Ms. Perez will surely contact you in the morning.”
Leland shook his head. “I can’t, Lara. I don’t dare. I made a mistake. I broke the vow I made to Kaylie. She swore that nothing could ever make her leave
“She declared that if I ever betrayed her, she wouldn’t make a scene; she’d leave silently, leaving me to grow old all alone.
“But I betrayed her. I was wrong, so terribly wrong. And now, I finally understand the depth of my error. That’s why I need to apologize to her and ask for her forgiveness…”
Lara quietly turned aside to wipe her tears. She glanced at the clock and whispered, “It’s only five hours until dawn. By the time it’s light, Ms. Perez will be gone. Can two people who once loved each other so deeply truly never be together again?”
Lara walked away. Leland remained seated by the door, his own eyes welling with tears. Suddenly, he noticed a faint, blinking red light emanating from a flowerpot not far behind him.
