Chapter151.

Watching the raw anguish etched across Leland’s face, a sharp pang stabbed through me, momentarily shattering the walls I’d built.

Tears blurred my vision, stinging. I hastily wiped them away, a sudden, unexpected flicker of panic rising within me. I turned back to Leland, my voice trembling slightly despite my resolve.

“I think you’re dirty, Leland. There’s no chance for us anymore. The 1.2 billion dollars-consider it the fruit of your labors over these 15 years. Anyway, I wish you…”

“No!” Leland cut me off, his voice low and hysterical with desperation.”I don’t want to be apart from you! I don’t want any money! I just want you! Kaylie, I beg you, it’s my fault. Can you forgive me just this once?” .

A suffocating weight pressed down on me, the carefully constructed composure threatening to crumble. In that instant, all the tangled emotions burst forth as tears that fell hot onto my hand.

Then, Tyrell’s fingers tightened around mine.”Anya, don’t cry. From now on, I’ll protect you.”

I looked up at him, and I wanted to tell him that I had only sought his protection as a shield against Leland.

Hearing him call me Anya again sent a fresh wave of ache through my chest. I numbly took the tissue he offered, the gesture kind but landing like a physical blow.

I took a shaky breath, forcing the words out, “Leland, from now on, we go our separate ways. Consider us strangers.”

As I spoke, I lifted my foot to step away, but his fingers clamped around my wrist.”I said I would make Caitlyn apologize to you when I saw you, Kay.”

A cold smile touched my lips.”Mr. Pearson, please call me Anya. Also, I’ve had my design review permissions restored. I have designed over a dozen models for the Leslie Group already; you can verify that. As for an apology, I think Caitlyn should reflect on her actions in jail. She believes she did nothing wrong, and frankly, I don’t require her apology.”

At that moment, Caitlyn had somehow crawled across the floor on her knees.”Ms. Perez, I was wrong. It was all delusion, wanting something far beyond my reach. I overestimated myself! Please forgive me, and please don’t hold it against Mr. Pearson, please!”

Taking a deep breath, the dam finally broke. The anger I’d been holding back for so long finally found release. But did Caitlyn truly understand the depth of her mistake?
