Chapter 76

Caitlyn’s words confused me. What conditions did Leland want me to agree to?

I could give up all the property. If he cared about me, he should have noticed how few of my things were left in our room. I was already prepared to leave. What more did he want?

Today, I had to leave the house because it was Johan’s funeral, and I had to attend it.

Standing up, I intended to find Leland, but Caitlyn slapped me right in the face.

“Did you hear me? Wash the clothes, then get the food ready! After that, Leland will come to see you.”

The slap stunned me. Caitlyn dared to provoke me. Even though I had almost no strength left, I wouldn’t tolerate it anymore.

I raised my hand and slapped her back.

“Caitlyn, I’m warning you, my patience is wearing thin. If you lay a hand on me again, you’ll live to regret it. I’ve been in this house for 25 years without ever stepping into the kitchen. Now, go tell Leland not to push his luck!”

My warning only elicited a sneer from Caitlyn. She spoke with utter disdain, “Listen up, Kaylie, you have to make breakfast today no matter what. If you don’t know how to cook, then learn! Otherwise, you’ll never see Leland again!”

As she spoke, Caitlyn waved her hand, and two 5-foot-11 men in suits appeared behind her. Wearing sunglasses and looking like bodyguards, they lifted me and took me to the kitchen.

Ms. Perez, Mr. Pearson ordered that you are not allowed to leave if you can’t make breakfast.”

I took a deep breath, feeling tears well up uncontrollably.

My anger caused my lower abdomen to hurt again, forcing me to crouch down.
