Seething, Zera hid behind a pillar by the doors and secretly called Jenny.

When the crowd thinned and Brad was pulled away, Tyrone drew Aella aside.

His dark gaze pinned her. “What exactly were you trying to pull just now?”

Aella was frank. “I thought you two were headed for a grand reunion, so I figured I’d help. I didn’t expect your beloved to lose her nerve.”

His face went so dark it could drip. “You’re awfully magnanimous.”

Aella’s expression stayed even. “After spending enough time with you, Mr. Winter, I’ve learned to let things slide.”

They stared each other down. Tyrone’s fingers tightened around hers, anger heaving in his chest.

He’d thought she was jealous.

It turned out she was matchmaking him and Zera.

From a distance, Aella saw the Leadverse matriarch, Beatrice Townsend, being escorted in by a ring of society ladies.

Aella slipped her hand free. “Go do your rounds. I’ll go greet Mrs. Townsend.”

Tyrone watched her stride toward the cluster of socialites, easy and poised, and felt a hard block in his chest.

He caught her wrist and straightened her shawl. “I’m heading to Mr. Townsend. Don’t wander off.”

Aella nodded and turned away.

He seemed like two different people–one second looking ready to wring her neck, the next smoothing her shawl and telling her not to roam.

Half an hour later, Aella stepped out of the side lounge where Beatrice was resting.

She scanned the ballroom–no Tyrone.

She checked the time: half past ten.

After saying her goodbyes to the hosts, Aella prepared to leave.

Zera had been mocked publicly by Brad and snickered at by the room. Tyrone would be beside himself.

He was probably busy comforting Zera. Why would he spare a thought for Aella?

“You’re Mr. Winter’s wife?”

At the exit, Jenny blocked her.

Aella stopped and nodded.

Jenny raked her gaze up and down Aella, jealousy leaking through. “Don’t think a pretty face means you get to compete with Zera. Mr. Winter loves her.”

Aella shook her head. “You’re wrong. My husband and I grew up together. I’m the only woman he’s ever loved.”

Jenny looked at her like she was an idiot.

Hand over her mouth, laughing, she said, “Mrs. Winter, why don’t you check the lounge and see who your husband is with right now?”

Aella’s mouth tipped at the corner. “Thanks for the tip.”

So, they’re upstairs.

Not far away, Hunter and Dana were chatting with Beatrice. Aella adjusted her shawl and walked over.

The ladies greeted her warmly.

Aella traded a few polite lines, then smiled. “Beatrice, Mrs. Buckley–my husband’s tied up and left me stranded. I’m bored to death. Anyone free to go upstairs and play a couple rounds?”

At the word “poker,” Dana threw both hands up in favor.

Soon, Aella and Dana were escorting Beatrice upstairs, followed by several grande dames.

Behind the ladies trailed Jenny, eager for the show.

Behind Jenny came a pack of guests sniffing for leverage.
