The only time was the day she had cried and begged him to agree to the divorce.
“Aella’s stubborn. If Zera keeps calling him that, Aella will never address him intimately again.”
Zera’s eyes reddened with grievance. “Tyrone, it’s just a form of address. Do you really have to take it this seriously?”
Tyrone’s face stayed blank. “It’s just a form of address—so change it.”
A flicker of frustration flashed in Zera’s eyes. “But Tyrone, if we sound too distant, I’m afraid your grandfather will get suspicious.”
Tyrone lowered his gaze, hiding whatever crossed his eyes.
Seeing he didn’t answer, Zera pressed on, “Tyrone, honestly, it doesn’t matter to me what I call you. I’ve kept a proper distance so your wife wouldn’t misunderstand. I’m not the kind of woman who doesn’t know her place, and I don’t have big ambitions.”
She promised, soft and earnest, “Today was my mistake. From now on, if we run into each other at events, I’ll keep far away and pretend I don’t even know you. Isn’t that enough?”
Tyrone hesitated a beat, then nodded. “In public, remember to call me Mr. Winter.”
Watching Tyrone stride off, Zera went limp and sank onto the couch.
He recognized the boy for one reason only–to repay her six years of sacrifice.
In private, he’d help her, but he refused to cross the line.
And now, he even minded how she addressed him.
She was always careful, never letting him see what she really felt.
But lately, he was drifting farther and farther away. Every time they met, he was either cold or distracted.
She’d scheme to get him to show, and he’d want to leave within minutes.
Compared to when she’d first come back, Tyrone’s patience for her had clearly thinned.
He couldn’t let go of Aella. He wanted to keep that marriage. He wanted to shake Zera off.
Her gaze slid to the torn–open pack of cigarettes and the lighter on the coffee table. A quick, calculating glint crossed her eyes.

Unhurried, Zera loosened two buttons on her blouse, then picked up the cigarettes and lighter.
At the same time, out in the corridor…
Aella and Dana were helping Beatrice down the hall, a circle of society matrons trailing them, when they ran into Tyrone.
Tyrone stopped in front of Aella, hiding his emotions. “What are you doing up here?”
Aella smiled. “If you were coming up to rest, why didn’t you tell me? I was downstairs looking all over and couldn’t find you.”
Something darkened in Tyrone’s deep eyes.
Dana said, “Mrs. Winter was bored and asked a few of us up for poker. We just happened to run into you.”
Tyrone looked steadily at Aella, his gaze tightening.
Without changing expression, he took her hand and said, “I came up to make a call. I was just about to go back down for you.”
Beatrice saw it and urged the group to head downstairs. “Aella, since Tyrone’s here, we’ll save poker for next time.”
People began to turn, ready to disperse.
Zera stepped out of the room holding the cigarettes and lighter. “Tyrone, you left your cigarettes and lighter in the room.”
Eyes flicked to her “slightly undone” blouse as she emerged from the room, then slid to Tyrone.
Aella looked at the suit Zera was wearing, and her expression went cold.
Right there, in front of everyone, she asked Tyrone, “Why is she in our room?”
Before Tyrone or anyone else could react, Aella asked again, “And why is she wearing my clothes?”
The questions drew sidelong looks and murmurs.
Zera hurried forward to explain, “Mrs. Winter, please don’t misunderstand. My period came early, and I stained my outfit by accident. Mr. Winter only helped me out of courtesy.”
Aella shot back, “You’re Ms. Townsend’s friend. If your period started early, why didn’t you ask your female friends for help? Why did you go to my husband?”
