My face darkened as the housekeeper’s words hung in the air. The implication was crystal clear – I was damaged goods in their eyes. A “previously mated she–wolf” unworthy of their precious heir.

I knew the Ashworth family was among the four most powerful werewolf dynasties in the Southern Territory. Their expectations for Hugo’s mate would naturally be high. But the woman’s condescending tone made my blood boil.

Just as I opened my mouth to deliver a scathing retort, a clear voice cut through the tension.

“Selina Walsh, you can’t represent my brother’s decisions, can you?”

The housekeeper startled visibly, her shoulders stiffening as she awkwardly stepped aside.

“Miss,” she acknowledged, her previous confidence evaporating.

I turned toward the doorway where a young woman stood. She appeared to be around twenty, with princess–cut straight hair that framed her face like a doll’s. Her skin was porcelain–white, almost luminescent in the morning light. She wore a warm–toned court–style nightgown with a knitted cardigan draped over her shoulders.

What struck me most were her eyes – beautiful fan–shaped eyes that bore an unmistakable resemblance to Hugo’s. I realized with surprise that I’d never known Hugo had a sister.

The young woman met my gaze and smiled slightly before turning her attention to Selina.

“She’s my brother’s guest, isn’t she?” Her voice remained gentle but carried an undercurrent of authority. “If my brother heard these words, you’d be in trouble.”

Selina’s face paled. “These were the Luna’s instructions-”

“Even if that was my mother’s intention,” the young woman interrupted smoothly, “your expression didn’t reflect the original message.”

She took a step closer to the housekeeper, her movements graceful yet somehow intimidating.

The housekeeper’s jaw tightened, but she turned to me with a stiff bow. “I apologize for my rudeness, Luna Blackwood.”

After Selina departed, I turned to my unexpected defender. “Thank you for speaking up for me.”

She smiled, the gesture warming her delicate features. “It’s my duty. The Ashworth family can’t let a few bad apples ruin our reputation.”

She circled around me with curious eyes, studying me from different angles. “Besides, you’re the first female guest my brother has brought home. I naturally had to side with you.”

I could only manage a helpless smile in response.

The sound of footsteps drew our attention to the staircase. Hugo descended unhurriedly, his expression shifting to a slight frown when he spotted his sister.

“Aren’t you supposed to be at the academy?” he asked.

She put her hands behind her back and tilted her head with a mischievous smile. “I heard you brought a she–wolf home, so I came back!”

“Do you need to meddle in such affairs?” Hugo sighed..

“Are you feeling embarrassed?” she teased, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

Watching them interact, a pang of nostalgia hit me. Their easy banter reminded me of my own brother, Adrian Whitmore. I’d almost forgotten that I too had a brother figure in my life.

The moment was interrupted by Professor Theodore Ashworth entering from outside. His face lit up when he saw me.

“Oh my, Elena, it’s rare that you have time to visit me today!”

I was momentarily confused. Wasn’t it Hugo who had called me over? I decided not to voice this question, instead nodding with a polite smile.

“I’m not that busy either, I just didn’t want to disturb you before.”
