Chapter 106
ALINA’S POV.
By the time I got to the office, my mood was so sour that my staff wisely gave me space.
I sat in my chair, eyes staring blankly at my sketch pad, until the door slammed open.

“Seriously, Alina?” Talia’s voice snapped me out of my spiral. “Even if you want to shut the entire world out, I can’t believe you’d shut me out too.” Her tone was a mix of anger and hurt.
“Hey Talia… what are you doing here?” I sighed, tiredly.
“Don’t ‘hey Talia’ me,” she shot back, hands planted on her hips. “If the mountain won’t come to Mohammed, then Mohammed will go to the mountain.”
I blinked.
“What is going on with you?”
“Nothing. I’m just exhausted,” I said. “You know I have a huge order I’m working on.”
“Don’t give me that crap, Ally,” she snapped, slamming her palms on the desk. “You know I’m not like everyone else. I don’t fall for your rehearsed answers.”
She stopped when she noticed the tears glistening in my eyes.
Her stern expression softened. “Hey, baby… don’t cry.” She walked over and pulled my head against her stomach, running her fingers through my hair as I broke down.
“There, there. I’ve got you.”
“Everything is slipping out of my control, Talia,” I sobbed. “I’m supposed to have the upper hand, I’ve been reborn, for crying out loud. I should be ahead of everything. But it’s like I’m doing life without a manual.”
“What happened, love? I can’t help if you don’t talk to me.” She murmured soothingly.
“You were right. Lucian was the one who funded Adrian’s project. I overheard him and Ace talking about it that night.” I confessed in a trembling voice.
“Did you confront him?” She asked gently.
“No. I was too stunned… and hurt.” I responded sniffing.
“Okay, but it’s been weeks, you could have talked to him about it. You know I always tell you, talk to him, tell him how you are feeling. He isn’t a mind reader Alina, he won’t know unless you tell him.”
“I don’t even know if I’d call what we did talking…”
“What do you mean?” She frowned, pulling away to look into my face.
“I confronted him about giving Adrian the project.”
“And what did he say?”
“That he did it because he thought I’d want him to.” My voice was hollow now.

Talia’s frown deepened. “That doesn’t sound right.”

“I know. I feel it too, there’s more he’s not telling me. But before I could push him, he got a phone call and left. And honestly, it didn’t seem like he was in a hurry to explain.” My tone was bitter.
“You should’ve asked about what you overheard.” She said, gently yet firmly.
“He didn’t even admit to giving the project to Adrian until I brought it up.” I muttered. “So how could I confront him about the rest?”
“You still haven’t told him about Elena and Silas, have you?”
I shook my head. “I didn’t get the chance to, I was going to…. until I heard him talking to Ace. Everything is a mess, Talia.” I groaned.” It’s like whenever something finally goes right, the universe finds a way to throw a wrecking ball at me.”
“I’m so sorry, baby,” she whispered. “But one thing I know for sure is that it’ll all clear up soon. That I can guarantee.”
“I hope so.” I took a deep breath. “I don’t even want to think about it anymore. I just want to focus on work.”
“That’s a great distraction.” She nodded in agreement.
“Any news about my birth parents… or the shadow man?” I asked after a few seconds of silence.
“The what now?” She raised an eyebrow.
“The man behind Elena and Silas.” I explained.
She looked like she wanted to make a joke about the name but held it in, thankfully because this was definitely not the topic
for humor.
‘No. Nothing yet.” She said, shaking her head.
“Is there-”
My phone rang, interrupting me. Cobi.
‘Hey Cobi, what’s up?” I asked, already sensing tension in his voice.
“Can we meet? Now? Please?” His voice was urgent, shaky.
“What’s going on?” I straightened my spine.
“You said I could call you if I ever needed anything… well, I need you.”
“Send me the address. I’m on my way.” I disconnected and stood up quickly.
