Chapter 109

ALINA’S POV

As soon as we were all settled, I let my expression turn serious.

“Now, tell us what happened.” My voice was low, but firm,my attention completely fixed on him.

“I was attacked last night,” he began, his tone laced with fatigue. “I’ve been following the lead that you-” he glanced at Talia,

-gave me. Apparently, Rosaline had been dating this mystery guy. He didn’t go to your school, but someone was finally able to give me something useful after I asked nicely.”

“Yeah, sure you asked nicely.”I muttered sarcastically under my breath, earning a faint eye roll from Talia.

He definitely threatened the person.

If he heard me, he didn’t show it. He just continued.

“I did my findings on the guy in question and got a picture. I’ve been trailing him for a few days now. I think he noticed, because I was jumped in an alleyway while following him,and shot. I think he did it.” He finished, his voice tight.

“Why were you following him though?” I asked, confused. “He only dated Rosa, right?”

“The guy’s bad news, Alina,” Cobi said, his brows furrowing. “He’s a cousin to a member of a notorious street gang, and I can’t help but wonder how Rosa even got involved with someone like that in the first place. It was so unlike her.”

“Did you notice anything odd about her behavior in the few weeks leading to her death?” I asked curiously, hoping maybe something had stood out to him that could give us a lead.

“No, I didn’t. She was her usual bubbly self. If there was something wrong, then she did a damn good job hiding it.”He responded, shaking his head in frustration.

There was a brief moment of silence as all three of us fell deep into our own thoughts.

Then Cobi spoke again.

“Did you?” He looked directly at me.

“Huh?” I blinked, caught off guard.

Did me what?

“Did you notice anything odd about her behavior?” He clarified, eyes fixed intently on my face.

Why was he asking me this?

I stared at him in confusion until Talia cleared her throat meaningfully, her eyes sending me a silent message.

Shit. I was supposed to have been friends with Rosa. Of course he was going to ask.

“Oh, no. I didn’t notice anything” I quickly told him, forcing a casual smile. I let out a quiet sigh of relief when he turned to

Talia.

“How about you?” He asked.

“Oh, I wasn’t close to her. Only bumped into her a couple of times around school,” Talia responded smoothly. “She always

looked bubbly, though.” She added.

Her lie was even more realistic than mine.

“I think this boyfriend of hers killed her.” Cobi said, his voice low but firm, filled with conviction. “Rosa was a smart girl. She knew better than to associate with people like him. Something isn’t right. And the fact that I was attacked yesterday only confirms that someone out there doesn’t want me uncovering the truth behind what happened to my sister.”

“What if she was being forced to be with him?” Talia asked, a hand to her chin.

Her question made so much sense.

“That would explain a lot,” Cobi agreed, nodding. “Because Rosa would never, never in her right senses, mingle with such a crowd.”

“Do you have a picture of this boyfriend?” Talia asked. “I could look for more information about him for you.”

“Yeah, I do.” He nodded and began to pull his phone from his pocket, wincing slightly from the pain of his injury. He tapped the screen a few times. “I just sent it to you.” He informed her before setting the phone beside him on the couch.

Talia’s phone pinged. She pulled it from her purse and stared at the screen.

“Good-looking dude.” Shr commented, it wasn’t admiration, more of an objective observation. “His face doesn’t ring a bell, though. But I’ll pass his picture to some of my contacts in the black market. They should be able to help us with information about him, dating back to a few weeks before your sister died and even after,” she told him. “Until then, you need to stay out of plain sight.”

“I have a condo in town,” I offered. “You can stay there until all of this is over. It has everything you’d need. And if there’s anything else, I can always send someone over. You can recover there without being bothered.”

“Are you sure?” He looked at me, eyes softening with gratitude.

“Of course. Lucian gifted it to me in the past, and I’ve never really seen the need for it, well until now.” I told him sincerely. “You can stay there for as long as you need.”

“Thank you so much, Alina. You’re truly God-sent.” He said, eyes glistening.

I knew he was secretly a big softy.
