couldn’t tell what roused me from unconsciousness first, the chill in the air or the metallic sting biting into my wrists.

My eyes fluttered open slowly, blinking against the dim yellow glow of a single overhead bulb. The air was thick with the aint smell of rust, dust and something sour, like old sweat and disinfectant that didn’t quite mask what it was meant to.

and then I saw them.

Dozens of them.

‘hotos.

They were everywhere, taped to the cracked green walls, hanging from strings, some even pinned to the ceiling above me. My breath caught in my throat. A soft gasp escaped as I scanned the room, my heartbeat beginning to thunder in my ears.

They were of me.

but not just me.

There was Rosa, pictures of her in college, smiling at a café, walking out of class, caught in blurry candid shots that only a talker would have taken.

And then other women. Five. No, six All strangers. Yet not really. Each one bearing the same delicate porcelain-like features. The same pale skin, soft bone structure, and doll-like face.

My face.

Lach photo was taken in secret. Me getting out of a car. Rosa laughing with a friend. One of the unknown women crying on vhat looked like a hospital bed.

sat up abruptly, only to be yanked back by the harsh pull of the metal cuffs clamped tightly around my wrist. The chain held me tight, fastened to the iron headboard of the bed I was lying on. My legs were free, but my wrist was locked in place

Panic surged through me

No,” I breathed, heart hammering. “No, no-”

yanked hard. Once, Twice.

The chain rattled violently.

HELP!” I screamed, throat raw with fear. “Somebody help me!”

Footsteps echoed from the hallway outside the door. Slow. Leisurely. Like whoever was out there was feeding from the sound of my fear.

The handle turned.

My entire body went rigid.

The door creaked open with a groan.

And there he was.

Jackson.

His face appeared in the doorway, like something out of my nightmare. He was smiling wide, far too wide. It didn’t reach his eyes, though. No, those eyes were far too wild and unhinged.

They gleamed like a predator who had finally trapped his prey.

“Finally awake,” he cooed softly, like we were lovers catching up after a nap. “You’ve been asleep for a long time, love.”

My blood turned to ice.

Why… why are you doing this?” I demanded, forcing my voice to stay steady despite the tremble in my hands. “What the hell do you want from me? Let me go. Please.’

Jackson stepped inside the room, slowly shutting the door behind him. He wore a plain white shirt, the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, exposing the veins in his forearms. He moved with the confidence of someone who believed he was doing nothing wrong.

He tilted his head, his gaze adoring in the most twisted way. “Because I love you, Rosa.” he said simply, as if it explained everything.

My breath hitched. No. No no no. He thought I was her, Rosa.

My stomach twisted.

You, You mean Alina.” I corrected, forcing calm into my voice.

He frowned briefly, then smiled again. “You’ve always done that. Pretending to be someone else. But it’s okay. I forgive you.”

froze.

I’ve always loved you,” he continued, voice soft with a strange, dreamy edge. “Even when you didn’t see me. Even when you chose others over me… I never stopped.”

‘You’re sick,” I snapped, unable to keep the tremor from my voice. “You need help.”

‘I don’t need help,” he said calmly, as he walked closer to the bed. His eyes flicked up to one of the pictures. Rosa’s face stared down from above. “I just need you.”

He lowered himself into the chair near the foot of the bed, his hands clasped together.

I never meant to hurt you.” he said quietly, gaze now fixed on the floor. “That night… that wasn’t the plan. I just… I wanted her to prove it. That she loved me. That she would do anything for me.But you ran. You made me chase you to the roof. You slipped.”

Her. I caught his slip.

My breath caught.

“You’re talking about Rosa.” I said, voice almost a whisper.

The images in my head played without permission, Rosa’s lifeless body crumpled on the pavement. His words confirmed what Cobi had suspected.

His eyes slowly rose to meet mine. “She was the first. So perfect. So soft and sweet. She never really saw me at first… but I made her. I showed her how much I cared.”

A tightness gripped my chest.

“She didn’t jump, did she?” I asked, my voice fragile. “You pushed her.”

He tilted his head. “She slipped. It wasn’t supposed to go that far. She hesitated. That’s how I knew it wasn’t real. If you love someone, you don’t hesitate.”

I recoiled, bile rising in my throat.

“You… you were the one,” I whispered, horror crashing over me like a wave. “You made her jump.”

Jackson blinked slowly, as if recalling a tender memory. “I didn’t make her do anything. I begged her. She was crying… said she didn’t want to live without me. I told her I’d always find her again.”
