ALINA’S POV

“How is she?” I could hear Cobi’s voice asking Talia.

She had been by my side for the two weeks I’d been unconscious.

I was awake,sort of, but my eyes felt too heavy to open, the same with my limbs. I couldn’t move them, but I could hear everything happening around me.

“The doctors said the cerebral swelling is almost gone, and she’ll wake up soon.” Talia told him softly.

“God, she looks bad.” Cobi said, his voice shaking with emotion.

Gee thanks a lot, Cobi, I thought sarcastically.

“Trust me, she is better now compared to two weeks ago. Her injuries are fading nicely.” Talia said gently.

“I’m glad she’s okay.” Cobi added, sounding relieved.

Me too.

There were a few moments of silence before Talia spoke again.

“And Jackson?” She asked.

My heart clenched at the mention of his name,or at least I think it did. I was sure that if I were awake, my whole body would be trembling.

“Mr. Blackwood has really done a number on him. He’s barely hanging on. Honestly, if I didn’t know he was a monster, I would’ve felt bad for the state he’s in. Every day he goes through the same torture, treated at the end of it, only to repeat the same process the next day,” Cobi said. “Lucian Blackwood isn’t really one to be messed with. Now I see how he got his reputation.”

My heart fluttered, hearing that Lucian wasn’t only getting justice for me, but for all the women Jackson had

hurt.

“No wonder he only comes here for a couple of minutes,” Talia noted. “Well, I’m glad that bastard is getting the punishment he deserves.” Her voice was hard as she spoke.

I was so lucky to have her as a friend.

“Trust me, he is.”

Cobi left after a while.

I don’t know how many days passed after that. Everything was just a blur. But the next time I woke up, my eyes fluttered open.

I shut them quickly as the bright fluorescent light blinded me, then slowly blinked until my eyes gradually adjusted.

I was connected to some machines, and although the room smelled slightly of disinfectant, it looked nothing like the hospital rooms I was used to.

Beside me, Talia was sleeping on a chair, her head resting on the bed.

“T….Ta….lia.” I called, but my voice came out croaky. My throat felt raw and sore.

I lifted my hand with great effort and gently ran it through her hair.

She moaned in comfort before she froze and jerked upright from the bed.

“Hi.” I croaked out managing a smile.

“Oh my God! Alina, you’re awake!” She exclaimed, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Before I could even ask for a glass of water, she was already up on her feet and running toward the door.

“Doctor! Doctor! She’s awake!” She yelled, her voice echoing down the hallway.

No, wait! I screamed in my head.

All I wanted was a glass of water.

I didn’t get one until twenty minutes later, after about five doctors were done poking and probing me.

“Do you need anything, Mrs. Blackwood?” A doctor,who I later found out was named Hastings, asked.

“Yes. Water.” I managed to whisper.

“Of course.” He nodded.

And just like that, all of them were running off to go get me a glass.

What was wrong with them? I stared at them, bewildered.

“Don’t blame them. Your fiancé has had them on a chokehold since you were brought in.” Talia chuckled beside me.

“Oh.” I breathed out.

That explained it.

I felt better once the glass of water was handed to me. The coldness soothed my sore throat.

“I feel weak.” I told Doctor Hastings.

“It’s normal, seeing as you’ve been unconscious for three weeks. You’ll regain your strength in time,” he assured me. “But we could administer some IV if you want.” He offered.

“Oh no, thanks.” I said almost immediately. I didn’t want any more needles or poking.

After a few minutes of follow–up questions, they finally left.

“Jesus.” I sighed in relief.

Talia chuckled in response. “It’s great to see you okay, baby. I was so scared.” Tears welled up in her eyes as she reached for my hand.

So was I.

But I didn’t say that. I couldn’t imagine the stress and pain she must have felt seeing me in that state.

“I’m fine now, baby. Thank you for staying with me.” I said, wiping her tears away with my thumb.

“Of course,” she nodded. “Not like I had a choice anyway. Your fiancé would’ve chained me to your bed if need be.” She joked, cracking a weak smile.
