I dialed Mia’s number, already saved on her phone.

The phone rang for a bit and then Mia’s tired voice came through.

“Good afternoon, Miss Hart, how is Miss Alina doing today?” Mia’s soft voice came through.

“I am doing fine Mia.” I answered, a smile spreading across my cheeks.

“Miss Alina?” She asked, unsure. I didn’t sound like myself because of my sore throat.

“In the flesh.” I joked weakly.

“Oh my goodness, ma’am! I’m so happy you’re alright. I’m so sorry for leaving you down there…” Her voice cracked, and she began to cry.

I had never heard her like this before.

“Hey, hey, it’s not your fault. In fact, I’m glad you weren’t there, or else you would’ve been hurt too,” I told her softly, hoping my words would comfort her. “Is Samuel okay though?” I suddenly wanted to know how the delivery guy was doing.

“Yes, ma’am, he is,” she sniffed. “He was discharged from the hospital the next day. Mr. Blackwood covered the hospital cost.”

Oh. I hadn’t known that.

“That’s good then,” I told her. It was a relief that nobody was seriously hurt… aside from me. “By the way, good job running things over at Alinova. At this rate, you’ll work your way to a manager position soon.” I said.

“Thank you so much, ma’am.” Her voice shifted to the bright note I was used to.

“Let me know if you need anything.” I added.

“Don’t worry, ma’am. I have everything under control. Just focus on your recovery.” She said gently.

“Thank you, Mia.”

“You’re always welcome, ma’am.”

And with that, I ended the call.

“Well, now that we have that out of the way, fill me in. What’s been happening?” I said to Talia.

“I don’t really know what’s going on in the world. I’ve been off the internet the past few weeks.” She responded.

“Well then, let’s catch up together.” I said excitedly, adjusting for her on the king–sized bed.

“Don’t you think you should be resting?” She said with concern.

“I’ve been resting for three weeks, Talia, please.” I said flatly.

“Fine.”

She got comfortable on the bed, and I shuffled closer to her, finding comfort in her body heat.

She scrolled through her phone and went to the trending news.

Adrian was trending.

“What’s happening?” I whispered, as both our eyes flickered across the screen, reading the headlines.

The Fairview project that was supposed to skyrocket his company to the top had just crumbled.

“But how? He has Lucian backing him…” I frowned, trying to make sense of what I was reading.

“Gimme a sec,” Talia said, grabbing her laptop from the side and clicking furiously on it. “No way.” She said in shock and amusement.

“What? No way what?” I asked urgently.

“Your man is responsible for Adrian’s company going under.” She told me.

“What? But why?” I was confused. “Why give him the project only to ruin it in the end? Unless…” I let the

words trail.

“This was the plan all along.” Talia finished with a whisper.

My mind flashed back to the conversation I had with Lucian after I found out he had sabotaged me. He had asked me to trust him.

“He’s been helping me all along.” I said softly.

A wave of guilt hit me. I had been giving him the cold shoulder for the longest time, and all along… he was just trying to help.

“I need me a man like yours, one that will be helping me fight my secret battles.” Talia sighed in envy.

But my mind was elsewhere. I had hidden the truth about his parents from him out of anger. And all this time… my anger had been misplaced.
