Alina barely had time to process everything before Lucian’s voice sliced through the tension in the room again.

“What do you mean no?” He asked, his brows furrowed, voice low but laced with disbelief.

He couldn’t believe her right now. She had lied to him and now that he was giving her an out, she is saying no.

She inhaled shakily, fighting to stay composed. “Lucian, I can’t just cut off all communication with Louis. We work together.”

His eyes narrowed, lips pressing into a thin line as he stepped closer. “Oh really now, that’s news to me,” He laughed drily, “what happened to not hiding things from each other? You promised you’d be honest with me, Alina. You stood in the dining hall, organized a candlelight dinner, asked for forgiveness and promised that the last time you hid something from me would be the last.” His gaze was filled with accusation.

Lucian’s heart clenched. He wasn’t a man that showed emotions but Alina always knew how to make him feel a lot of things. It gets overwhelming and sometimes he doesn’t know how to handle those emotions.

“I didn’t sign the contract with him knowing it was him,” she said quickly in her defense. “Mia was the one who scouted out investors after Alinova launched. By the time I realized it was Louis, the deal had been signed. I’d have to pay a huge amount if I was to break it so I had to suck it up.”

Lucian’s jaw clenched. He stared at her like he didn’t recognize her. “So you had to suck it up.” He repeated flatly.” So you’ve been working with Louis this entire time? I have to give it to you Alina, you hid it so damn well.” He said, clapping.

She shook her head. “I wasn’t hiding it, Lucian, it just didn’t come up.”

“It just didn’t come up? Very convenient don’t you think?” He asked her crossing his arms.

“I just… I was trying to handle things myself. I had just started my company. I didn’t want to come running to you for help.”

“So your pride was more important than telling me the truth?” he snapped.

“It wasn’t like that.”

Lucian let out a harsh breath, dragging a hand down his face. “Then end the contract. I’ll give you the money to pay Louis off.”Lucian snapped “Why didn’t you come to me in the first place?”

“Because I didn’t think I had to! I’m not some helpless woman who needs rescuing at every turn,” she fired back, her voice cracking slightly. “And Louis isn’t as bad as you think he is.”

Lucian couldn’t believe that she was now speaking for Louis. Why wouldn’t she just take the damn money and get rid of him?

As if Alina could hear his thoughts, she let out a deep sigh before speaking.

“Lucian, It’s not just about the money!” she said, voice rising with frustration. “It’s about the work we’ve done. Louis has helped Alinova grow. He believed in the brand, brought in my first international client and also gave ideas and suggestions that got Alinova where it is today.”

Lucian scoffed. “And that makes him what? A saint?” His eyes darkened. “You keep defending him like he’s some misunderstood hero. If it’s just work like you claim, Alina, then explain why the fuck you were on a date with him? Laughing and blushing like some smitten girl? Him wiping your lips.” Lucian’s fist clenched tightly at the last one.

“It wasn’t a date!” she cried. “I bought him lunch because he saved me from Adrian the other day, and got injured in the process. That’s all it was.”

He laughed bitterly. “So now he’s your savior too?”

“Lucian don’t be like tha—”

“How many times, Alina?” he suddenly asked, cutting her off. “How many times have you stayed late working with him? Just the two of you. How many meals have you shared with him behind my back?”

Alina’s mouth opened, but no words came.

Lucian’s voice dropped, quieter now, but it hit harder. “How many times did you run to him when we weren’t speaking?”

She flinched.

He noticed.

“I see,” he muttered, his throat tightening.

“Lucian, I didn’t-” her voice broke, she hadn’t at any point run to Louis. Yes sometimes they spoke about things to keep her mind off Lucian but that was it.

“I was hurting, and I didn’t know how to fix things between us. But I never crossed the line.”

“Maybe not physically,” he said, staring at her. “But emotionally? You tell me.”

Alina’s eyes filled with tears. His words were cutting, worse because they were not true. She had always stayed professional with Louis, but her silence had made things worse,

Alina’s voice suddenly rose in defense. “And what about you? You were on a date too! With that woman beside you!”

Lucian froze for a second, then let out a humorless laugh, running a hand down his face.

“Don’t make this about me,” he muttered. “That woman is Jessica Mendez. My secretary. We were there for a business meeting with my client.”

Her face paled. “Lucian, 1—”

“Don’t try to project on me, Alina.” He cut her off harshly. “I am not you that runs to another man’s arm at a slight hiccup.” He added bitterly.

“I didn’t run to him to spite you like you are thinking, he was just… there, and not once did we talk about my relationship with you.” She tried to make him understand. “Can you stop being jealous, please?” She begged.

Lucian stepped back, shaking his head. “This isn’t about jealousy, Alina. There’s something off about that man. Something I can’t quite place, and you’re too damn stubborn to see it.”

“That’s not fair.”

His voice lowered. “How would you feel if I was working closely with someone who made you uncomfortable? If you asked me to stop and I said no?”

Alina froze.

“li..Luc-”

Her stuttering silence was answer enough.

Lucian’s next words were quiet, disappointed. “Exactly.”

She looked down, guilt crawling up her spine. She knew he was right. But how could she just abandon a deal so close to completion?

“He only has two weeks left, Lucian,” she said softly. “Please. Just give me until then.”

But Lucian’s expression had hardened.

The thought of her spending any more time with him was not appealing.

“It’s either him or me.”

Alina’s heart dropped. Her breath caught in her throat.

She looked at him, pleading. “Please, don’t make me choose. You know I want to be with you, I will always choose you.”

“Then prove it.” He said.
