“So you rejected my lunch offer just because you wanted to go on a date with another man?” His voice was calm, but Alina knew better than to be fooled by that tone.
Lucian.
Alina froze.
What was Lucian doing here? she thought, heart lurching in panic.
She slowly got up and turned around, eyes shut, praying she had just imagined things. But when she opened them, Lucian was indeed standing there, with a cold, unreadable look in his eyes.
Beside him stood a gorgeous blonde woman in an outfit far too short and revealing for work attire. Her hair was pinned into a flawless bun, not a single strand out of place.
“Lucian,” Alina breathed out, trying to gather herself. “What are you doing here?” She let out a nervous laugh, reaching for calm she didn’t feel.
“What am I doing here?” Lucian scoffed, his voice laced with disbelief.
What Alina really meant was, out of all the restaurants in the city, why this one? She knew it had to be a coincidence; Lucian looked just as shocked to see her.
“That’s not what I meant, baby-”
“Wait a damn bastard minute,” Lucian cut her off, eyes narrowing. “Isn’t this the guy from the party months ago?” His gaze snapped to Louis, hard and intense.
Louis’s face remained neutral, but there was a faint twitch at the corner of his lips.
“Louis Grey,” Louis said, standing up with the practiced ease of someone used to tension. “Alina’s business partner. Great to see you again, Mr. Blackwood.” He extended his hand toward Lucian.
Alina wanted so badly to yell at Louis to shut up and not make things worse, but she couldn’t create a scene here
Lucian glared at Louis’s outstretched hand, then turned to Alina with a look of betrayal clouding his eyes.
He couldn’t believe her. He had asked her to stay away from Louis because something about the man didn’t sit right with him, and all along, she had been working with him behind his back.
“Miss Mendez, have the company driver come pick you up.” Lucian said without even glancing at Jessica. Then, without another word, he turned around and walked away.
Alina quickly began to grab her things.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble,” Louis apologized, voice low with genuine concern, but beneath his concern was glee.
“No, no. This is not your fault. You’re fine.” Alina assured him, forcing a calm smile despite the rising tension
in her chest.
“Are you sure?” He asked, his expression skeptical.
“I’m sure, Louis. See you at work?” She said with a strained smile.
“See you at work.” Louis nodded, returning her smile with one of his own.
With that, Alina rushed after Lucian.
As soon as she turned her back, a sinister smile crept across Louis’s face.
He was on the right track. He knew men like Lucian were possessive and territorial, and women like Alina were stubborn. It was only a matter of time before she came running to him, needing a shoulder to cry on.
“I see we have similar interests.” A voice said beside him.
Jessica, who was still standing there, pulled Louis’s attention away from Alina’s retreating figure.
“And you are?” Louis asked flatly, eyes narrowing in disinterest.
“Jessica Mendez. Mr. Blackwood’s secretary.” She stretched her perfectly manicured hand toward him in introduction.
“And so?” Louis raised an eyebrow, unimpressed and clearly not understanding why she was still standing
there.
Jessica, though undeniably beautiful, had always gotten her way with a smile and a bat of her lashes, but Louis would now be the second man not moved by her charms. Lucian had been the first.
“I can understand that you’re being cautious, but I’m just trying to help you.” Jessica smiled, withdrawing her hand when he didn’t take it.
“Do I look like I need your help?”
“Yes. It’s obvious you like Alina. I can help you get her.” Jessica offered smoothly.
“No thanks. I have it under control. His tone was dismissive as he scanned the QR code on the table to pay the bill that Alina had forgotten to pay in a rush to leave. “Have a nice life, Jenna.”
Louis knew women like Jessica. He was on a mission, and the last thing he needed was a love–struck secretary getting involved and ruining things for him.
“It’s Jessica,” she corrected quickly. “And I can help you keep Lucian busy, so you can have more time with
Alina.”
That made Louis pause mid–step.

“You have three minutes.” He said, not turning around.
Jessica smirked. Got him.

“You like Alina, and I’ve been in love with Lucian for as long as I can remember. Even back then, when she still treated him like crap and he’d spend most of his time in the office just to avoid her, I’ve been there. Alina doesn’t deserve him, and I want her out of the picture. So that Lucian can finally see me.”
Louis didn’t like the idea of working with anyone, but someone like Jessica might just be what he needed.
“Go on.” He said, finally turning to face her.

Meanwhile, Lucian was waiting in the car when Alina stepped out. Lee and Jordan were nowhere in sight. Ace stood at the door, holding it open for her.
She got into the car without a word, and Ace slammed the door behind her before rounding the car and getting into the driver’s seat.
The car ride was heavy with silence, thick and suffocating. Alina sat tensely, hands curled on her lap. She couldn’t help the wave of relief that washed over her when the car finally pulled up in front of the mansion. Fresh air. Freedom.
“Ace, get Jordan in there right now.” Lucian growled, storming into the mansion without a backward glance.
“Oboy.” Alina muttered under her breath.
Ace threw her an accusing look before walking away.
“Seriously?” She said aloud, glaring at his back.
Why were they making it seem like she cheated? she wondered with a sigh, walking into the mansion after
him.
She entered just in time to hear Lucian yelling.
“Everybody out!!”
Lucian didn’t need an audience for this. He knew how nosy they all were.
The staff quickly filed out through the back door to the staff building, located about twenty feet behind the
