Alina turned slowly, her fingers tightening around the lunch pack as her eyes settled on the woman standing a few feet away, elegant, poised, and unmistakably familiar. It was the same woman she had seen with Lucian at the restaurant that day, everything went to hell between them.

Jessica Mendez.

Alina blinked, then straightened her posture. “I’m going up to see Lucian,” she said calmly, though the tension in her chest was undeniable. “He’s expecting me.”

Jessica’s crimson lips curled into a tight smile, though her eyes remained cold. “Is that so?”

Alina nodded, her tone still even. “I sent him a text earlier. He saw it.”

“Did he reply though?” Jesicca said knowingly, her smirk getting on Alina’s nerves.

“He might not have replied, but he knows I’m coming.” Alina said sharply.

Jessica folded her arms across her chest, her voice clipped. “Mr. Blackwood is busy. He doesn’t have time for…. irrelevant engagements.”

“Excuse me?”

Alina’s brows twitched slightly at the sharpness of the words. She hadn’t expected warmth, but the hostility in Jessica’s tone caught her off guard.

“I believe I spoke in clear English.” Jessica sounded like she was talking to a pesky child she couldn’t wait to get rid of.

“Do you have a problem with me?” Alina asked, genuinely confused.

Jessica tilted her head with mock curiosity. “I don’t know. You tell me.”

Alina’s fingers tightened slightly around the lunch pack, but she kept her tone composed. This wasn’t the place to cause a scene, especially not with things still fragile between her and Lucian.

“I don’t want to argue with you,” Alina said quietly. “Just go confirm with Lucian. He’ll tell you I’m telling the truth.”

Jessica shrugged. “I don’t have to do that for you. You can call him yourself if you like.”

Suppressing a frustrated sigh, Alina pulled out her phone and dialed Lucian’s number. Once. Twice. No

answer.

When she looked up, Jessica was watching her with a barely concealed smirk. “Did he pick?” She asked sweetly, already knowing the answer.

Alina’s expression flickered with restraint. She could feel her temper bubbling under the surface, but she refused to let this woman provoke her, not here, not now.

“I’ll just leave this with you then,” she said after a beat, extending the lunch pack toward Jessica. “Please make sure you give it to him.”

Jessica took the box with a perfectly polished smile. “Of course.”

Alina hesitated for a second, her eyes lingering on the elevator she wouldn’t be taking. Then, with a quiet, disappointed “Thanks,” she turned and walked away, each step she took heavier than the last.

Jessica watched Alina walk away through narrowed eyes, heels clicking against the polished floor as if each step brought her closer to some self–righteous victory.

Only when Alina’s figure disappeared completely did Jessica turn on her heel and stride toward the front desk.

The young receptionist, Emma, looked up just as Jessica approached and placed the lunch pack on the

counter.

“Trash it.” Jessica said curtly, already beginning to turn away.

Emma blinked, startled. “Pardon?” She asked, unsure if she’d heard correctly.

Jessica looked over her shoulder, her eyes flashing. “Did I stutter?”

Emma’s lips parted in disbelief. She had witnessed the exchange between Jessica and Alina earlier and had genuinely assumed Lucian was simply too busy to meet anyone, not that Jessica was deliberately keeping Alina away. But now, now it was obvious there was something deeper.

Rumors had been circling around the office for a while. That Jessica was in love with Lucian. That her dedication went beyond the bounds of professionalism. And now, watching her discard Alina’s effort with so little thought, Emma knew exactly what this was…jealousy.
