When Alina snuck out of her penthouse suite, her heart thundered in her chest. She knew it was risky, dangerous even, but the walls were closing in, and the weight in her chest was too much to carry another second. She had to get away.
Away from here, away from the memories of it all and most of all, away from Lucian.
The hurt was suffocating. It twisted through her chest like a vice, deeper than anything she had ever felt before.
After hours of sobbing into her pillow, she had wiped her swollen eyes and quietly placed both the black card and her engagement ring on the marble counter. She stared at the ring for a second longer, her hands trembling, then turned her back on it.
The next call she made was to Talia.
Her voice cracked the moment her best friend picked up.
“Alina? Jesus Christ, are you crying? What’s wrong baby?” Talia’s voice was alert, tinged with panic.
Through shaky breaths and quiet sobs, Alina clutched her phone tightly to her ear. “I finally got through to him last night,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “But it wasn’t him who picked up… it was Jessica.”
Talia’s breath caught on the other end.
“She sounded so smug,” Alina continued, wiping at her cheeks. “And then… then she sent me a video. I have watched it over and over again hoping that it wasn’t true but it is Talia. ”
There was a sharp pause before Talia’s furious voice shot through the line. “Wait, what video?” Talia asked confused,” And what the heck was that bitch doing with him at that time of night?”
“I don’t know,” Alina whispered brokenly, wiping at her cheeks. “And honestly? I don’t care anymore. I just want to leave, Talia… I just want to disappear. But I don’t know how to get past Jordan and Lee. They’re standing guard right outside the building.”
“Ok? first of all, breathe.” Talia told her.
“I can’t.” Alina choked out. “I feel like I am suffocating.” She clawed at her throat.
“Deep breaths baby, we don’t want you having a panic attack.” Talia said hating that she wasn’t there right now for her friend. “In and out.” She coached.
Alina followed her guidance, taking in a deep breath and exhaling it.
“That’s it, good job.” Talia praised. “In and out.”
They repeated the process until Alina was calm enough.

“Yes, thank you Talia, I really do not know what I would have done without you.” Alina’s voice was filled with gratitude.
“You wouldn’t get to find out baby, I’ve got you. Now you need to use the service door, it shouldn’t be filled with workers at this time of the night.” Talia said without missing a beat. “Now, and quietly, try not to draw any attention to yourself.”
Alina didn’t think twice. She slipped out the service exit, hugging her coat tighter around herself as the night air hit her damp face. Her hands were shaking, her body still raw with emotion, but she kept moving.
“I am out.” Alina told her once she was a block away, her voice small.
“Good….Alina.” Talia called.
“What?”
“Are you sure this is safe? Don’t you want to maybe wait till morning before you leave? I mean it’s late, and you’re alone without your bodyguards.”
“No it’s not safe and I am scared shitless,” Alina admitted softly. “But I need this Talia, I need to get out of here.”
“I understand, I will be with you every step of the way till we get you to a safe place okay?”
Alina’s throat thickened at the sound of her friend’s voice. “Thank you…”
Talia’s fingers flew over her keyboard, pulling up every nearby feed. “Alright. I need you to walk by the corner with the old bookstore. There’s a CCTV there. Let it catch you.”
“What? Why?” Alina almost shrieked. “Isn’t the aim to go unnoticed?” She added, confused.
“It is, but if Lucian starts tracing you, it’ll throw him off. Let him chase shadows.” Talia said with a small grunt, focused.
“Oh ok.” She nodded in understanding.
Alina did as told, even walked into a 24–hour supermarket, dragging her feet down one aisle just long enough to be captured on camera. Then she stepped out.
“Now what?”
“Next left. That route has fewer cameras,” Talia instructed. “From there, get a taxi to the airport.”
“The airport?”
“Yes, since I can’t come to you because of work, then you will come to me. You need to get out of the city if you want to have any chance of hiding from Lucian.”
Alina knew Talia was right. It wouldn’t take Lucian anything to find her if she stayed in Elaris but it would take
