Alina felt the weight of it pressing down on her chest, her hands trembling as she gripped the edge of the desk, her voice breaking. Oh God

Talia finally closed the files, leaning back. I tried to trace where this person is based. The signal doesn’t point to Elaris. I don’t know where they are exactly but they’re not in the city that I am sure of.

A shaky breath of relief escaped Alina’s lips. At leastat least they’re not here.

But then a thought jolted her, making her stomach drop. Waitshe whispered, recalling the call from months ago. The man in the shadows. The strange number. The mechanical voiceShe turned quickly toward Talia, her eyes wide with alarm. Do you think it’s the same person?

Talia studied her for a moment, then gave a slow, grave nod. I’ve been thinking the same thing. Yes, it’s very possible.

Alina’s panic surged, her chest heaving. Why me? Why is this person doing this to me? I don’t even know them, I’ve never wronged anyone like this. What do they want from me?Her voice wavered, raw with fear.

Talia’s gaze softened just slightly, though her tone remained steady. I don’t know. Not yet. But I’ll find out, even if it’s the last thing I do. This is bigger than Louis, bigger than Jessica. We’ve stumbled into something none of us saw coming.”

Alina swallowed hard, her throat dry, lips trembling. Isis that everything? She whispered.

Talia hesitated, her expression turning cautious. There’s one more thing.”

Alina’s stomach churned at Talia’s expression, her voice barely audible. What is it?

Talia leaned in slightly, her voice dropping. I suspect this same personcould also be the one your adoptive parents are working for.”

Alina’s eyes went wide, her entire body freezing. What?A..are y..you sure? She stuttered.

I’m not certain,Talia admitted quickly, holding up a hand. Maybe fifty percent. But it’s a possibility, and I’ll dig further.”

That was the breaking point.

Alina’s body began to tremble uncontrollably in fear, her breaths coming too fast. Her hands clutched at the edge of the desk, knuckles white, before slipping away as she staggered back a step and sat slightly at the edge

of a table.

Nono, this is too much, she whispered, shaking her head. Tears brimmed in her eyes, blurring her vision.

The room seemed to close in around her as the truth sank deeper, each revelation striking harder than the

last.

Breathing became a difficult task, it was obvious she was having a panic attack. Her chest tightened painfully

A sob tore from her throat, raw and helpless.

I don’t understand, why me? Why them? Why all of this? Her voice cracked, her panic spiraling. She pressed her palms against her temples, trying to steady herself, but her knees weakened beneath the weight of it all.

Talia moved quickly, her hand reaching out, steadying Alina’s arm before she collapsed.

Breathe, Alina. Look at me,she urged, her voice firm but soft. I know this feels like the ground’s been pulled out from under you, but I need you to know that you’re not alone in this. I’ll find out who’s behind it. I swear it.”

Alina’s tears slipped free, streaking down her cheeks. Her whole body shivered, her lips trembling as she tried to form words but couldn’t. All she could do was cling to Talia’s arm, holding on as though it were the only solid thing left in her collapsing world.

Alina’s breaths slowly began to steady, though her body still trembled faintly. She wiped at her damp cheeks with the back of her hand, avoiding Talia’s gaze for a moment, ashamed of her own breakdown.

Talia gave her a brief, assessing look, sharp, calculating, but filled with understanding. When she finally spoke, her tone carried a firm steadiness meant to anchor Alina back to the present.

Listen to me,” Talia said, her voice low but deliberate. Don’t let this eat you up right now. Tomorrow is too important. You need to focus on the launch.”

Alina blinked, her chest still tight. Focus on the launch? She repeated faintly, as though the words felt out

of reach.

Yes,” Talia pressed, leaning closer, her eyes intent. One step at a time. We’ll deal with Louis, but not right now, not tomorrow. First, we get rid of Jessica. She’s the immediate problem standing in your way.”

Alina swallowed hard, her lips trembling as she forced herself to meet Talia’s eyes. There was a flicker of fear still lingering there, but also a spark of determination, faint but struggling to grow. JessicaShe whispered, the name laced with anger.

She has let her think she has the upper hand for far too long.
