Evening came fast and soon Alina sat with her hands folded on her lap, her gaze drifting to the window though her reflection looked back at her more than the city lights.
The air carried a hushed anticipation as the sleek black car cut through the streets, heading toward the venue.
Inside, Beside her, Talia leaned in with her usual mix of warmth and fire. “Don’t worry,” she said softly, reaching over to nudge Alina’s hand. “I’ll be with you the whole time. Even if you want to use the toilet, I’m following you in.” Her lips curved into a smirk meant to lighten the tension.
Alina gave her a faint smile, though her chest was tight.
“And it’s not just me,” Talia went on, flicking her chin toward the front seats. “Jordan and Lee are right here. You’ve got an army watching over you tonight.”
At the mention of their names, Alina glanced at the two men in front. Jordan’s knuckles were pale against the steering wheel, and Lee’s jaw was tight, his eyes scanning the streets like a hawk. Neither man had spoken much since they set out.
Lucian’s warning hung heavy over them. He hadn’t forgiven their lapse weeks ago, letting Alina slip away, only for it to come out that Louis had been stalking her under their very noses. They knew the cost of failing again.
Sensing the weight pressing down on Alina, Talia tapped her arm. “Enough of that serious face. Let’s talk about something better.” She leaned back with a grin. “I still can’t believe I get to walk the runway tonight. Finally, someone’s letting me shine.”
Alina’s lips curved into a genuine smile this time, her voice softer, steadier. “That’s because you’re the perfect person to wear that piece. Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone else pulling it off the way you will.”
“Damn right.” Talia teased, tossing her red hair over her shoulder with exaggerated flair, making Alina laugh.
The lightness carried them for a while, filling the car with warmth. But as the driver slowed, the laughter faded.
The venue loomed ahead, bathed in golden lights that spilled across polished stone steps. A grand red carpet stretched from the curb to the entrance, lined with velvet ropes. Camera flashes already sparked as reporters and photographers clustered outside, their eager voices carrying even from inside the car.
Tension wrapped itself around the vehicle like a vice.
Talia turned, her expression softening as she studied Alina’s face. “Ready?” she asked, her voice lower now, steady.
Alina was quiet for a long moment, her chest rising and falling as she pulled in a breath. Then, slowly, her features hardened, resolve flickering in her eyes.
She gave a single nod, her voice strong when it finally came. “I am ready.”
