Lucian’s gaze sharpened. “Damien just what?”

She shook her head quickly, forcing a smile. “Nothing.” But inside, unease lingered.

He just feels… familiar.

Instead of voicing it, she clapped her hands lightly, breaking the tension. “Well, the lunch is ready. Let’s eat.”

She began pulling out the food–to–go bags and setting them neatly on the table, her movements steady though her thoughts quietly churned.

As they settled into their meal, Alina tried to brush away the lingering thought of Damien’s strange reaction. She glanced at Lucian between bites before finally speaking, her voice carrying a quiet edge.

“Why didn’t you tell me that the unknown man had called? And that Louis is dead? Why did I have to hear it from somebody else?”

Lucian’s hand stilled on his fork. He sighed, leaning back slightly in his chair, his gaze softening as it met hers.

“Doll…..please don’t be upset. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to worry you. You’ve been so busy with your sales and all those orders coming in. I wanted you to focus on that. I was planning on telling you once things slowed down at your store. I didn’t mean to keep it from you.”

Her lips parted, the frustration in her eyes dimming just a little. “I understand, but you should be telling me these things, Lucian. I was so surprised to hear it. And then….Talia knew before me. It made me feel… left out. I get it, she’s working closely on the case, but still, I’d rather hear things like this from you.”

Lucian’s expression shifted, guilt flickering across his face. He reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers.

“I’m sorry. Truly. Next time, I’ll make sure to tell you, no matter what. You have my word.”

Alina gave a small nod, her lips curling into a faint smile at his sincerity. They finished eating in companionable quiet until her phone pinged, vibrating on the table. She reached for it casually, but when her eyes caught the name on the screen, she froze.

Silas.

Her breath hitched softly. It had been months since she’d heard from her family, and the silence had almost felt like peace. But now, seeing his name lit on her phone screen sent a swirl of emotions rushing through her.

Lucian noticed her expression immediately. “Who is that?” He asked, his tone low, cautious.

Alina blinked and looked at him. “It’s… Silas.”

Lucian’s brows shot up in shock. “What does he want?”

She looked back down at the message, reading it once more as if her eyes might have deceived her. “He wants to see me. Says it’s important. He wants me to come over to the house.”

Lucian leaned forward, his jaw tightening. “Are you sure you want to go?”

“Yes,” she said firmly, though her voice softened after. “It’s fine. I want to hear what he has to say. They’ve been silent for too long, Lucian, and I need to know what’s going on. Who knows, maybe I can even find clues about the person they’re working for.”

Lucian exhaled slowly, studying her face with clear concern. Then he gave a short nod. “Alright. But you need to be careful.”

“I will,” she reassured him with a small smile. “I’ll go with Jordan and Lee. I’ll be safe.”

He tilted his head slightly. “Do you have any idea what he wants to talk about?”

She shook her head. “No… none. But I’ll find out.”

“When do you plan to go?” He pressed.

“Probably this weekend,” she said, setting her fork down. “I moved a lot of things around till tomorrow just to have this lunch with you, so I can’t go right away.”

Lucian nodded again, thoughtful.

Alina quickly typed out a reply to Silas, telling him she’d come over during the weekend. Just as she pressed send, her phone was suddenly plucked out of her hand.

“Lucian!” she gasped, startled as he set it aside and then tugged her into his lap. Her cheeks flushed as she looked at him. “What are you doing?”

His lips curved into a slow, wicked smile. “I’m hungry.”

Alina blinked, tilting her head in confusion. “But you just ate.”

“Yeah…” His voice dropped, husky, as his arms tightened around her. “But I’m hungry for something else.”

Her breath caught as he stood, lifting her easily. Her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist, her arms clinging to his shoulders.

“Lucian-” she whispered, her heart racing.

He carried her to his desk, sweeping things aside with one hand before setting her down gently on the polished surface. His eyes burned into hers as he leaned closer, his voice rough with intent.

“Sure, I’ve eaten…” His lips brushed her car, sending a shiver down her spine. “…but now I want to eat.”

Alina’s breath hitched, her eyes darting nervously toward the office door as Lucian’s lips trailed closer. She stuttered, her voice trembling between hesitation and a rush of heat.
