The weekend had come quickly, and Alina was moving around her bedroom, straightening the hem of her dress and adjusting her hair in the mirror. Lucian sat on the edge of the bed, phone in hand, watching her every movement with a quiet intensity.
“Do you really have to go?” His voice carried a subtle edge, though he tried to mask it with calm.
Alina glanced over her shoulder, a small smile tugging at her lips. “Yes, Lucian. I have to.”
He frowned, setting his phone aside. “Honestly… I don’t like it. I don’t trust those people.”
Alina’s expression softened, but her tone was steady. “I know. But we’ve agreed that I’ll be going with Jordan and Lee. I’ll be fine.”
Lucian’s eyes darkened slightly, his jaw tightening. “Be careful. And if anything goes wrong… you call me. Immediately. Don’t wait.”
Alina raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile forming. “Then what’s the point of having Jordan and Lee with me?”
Lucian’s glare sharpened, warning and sharp as steel. “Don’t test me Doll.”
She chuckled softly, holding up her hands in mock surrender. “Okay, okay. I’ll call you. Happy now?”
He nodded slightly, though his expression betrayed the lingering tension in his chest. “Good. Make sure you do.”
Lucian watched her for a long moment, his hands tightening around the edge of the bed before finally releasing them. “Be safe.” He murmured, almost to himself.
Alina walked over to him and placed a quick kiss on his lips before pulling away with a soft, reassuring smile on her face. “I will. Don’t worry, Lucian.”
Alina shot him another warm smile, giving him a small nod before grabbing her bag and heading toward the door. Outside, the sun glinted off the sleek cars waiting.
She called out cheerfully, “Hi, Jordan! Hi, Lee!”
Both men nodded respectfully, expressions unreadable as always. Alina slipped into the passenger seat, buckling herself in. “Let’s go. Head over to my parents‘ house.”
The drive was quiet. Alina stared out of the window, lost in her thoughts as the cityscape gave way to the quieter streets surrounding her parents‘ house. The familiar route now felt strangely foreign.
Before stepping out of the car, she turned to Jordan and Lee. “If I stay longer than thirty minutes to an hour, come get me, okay?”
Both men nodded, their faces impassive, but she could sense the unspoken agreement in their eyes.

“Understood ma’am.” Jordan said simply.
Alina took a deep breath and stepped out, her heels clicking softly against the driveway. The house she had grown up in loomed before her, elegant but somehow unfamiliar. Anxiety prickled at the edges of her composure as she raised her hand and knocked on the front door.
The door swung open almost immediately, and Maria, the housekeeper, greeted her with a radiant smile. “Alina! It’s been so long!” She pulled her into a warm hug. “I am so happy to see you, darling. You look wonderful! How are you doing?”
Alina relaxed slightly at the familiarity of the embrace. “I’m… doing okay. How about you, Mrs Maria?”
“Oh, I’m doing well. I’ve been seeing you on TV, everywhere, really. You’re doing so well for yourself, I’m just so proud to see you thriving!” Maria’s voice brimmed with genuine happiness.
Alina smiled, touched by the warmth. “Thank you, Mrs Maria. That means a lot.”
Maria gave her a little squeeze before stepping back. “Now, your parents are in the tea room. They’re expecting you.”
“Thank you.” Alina said, straightening her posture as she turned toward the house.
Maria called after her with a small hesitation in her voice. “A little heads up, Alina… Seraphina is back.”
Alina froze for a split second, her mind flashing to memories she hadn’t wanted to relive. She hadn’t expected Seraphina to return so soon.
As far as she knew, her adopted sister was out of the country for a while. The thought of Seraphina being back brought a twinge of unease, she knew the trouble her sister could cause.
Shaking herself slightly, Alina composed her face into a neutral expression, smoothing down the slight tension in her shoulders. “Alright, thanks for the heads up.” She murmured softly, almost to herself, before continuing toward the tea room.
Each step carried a mix of familiarity and apprehension as she pushed the door open, ready to face whatever awaited her inside.
Alina stepped into the tea room, her chest tightening with a mixture of anxiety and hesitation. To her surprise, only Silas and Elena were there. Seraphina was nowhere in sight, much to her relief.
Elena rose from her chair and approached her, wrapping her in a hug. Alina stiffened for a moment, caught off guard. They had never been the affectionate type, moments like this were always calculated. She allowed it for a few seconds, knowing instinctively that after the pleasantries, they would reveal their true intentions.
“How are you, Alina?” Elena asked, her voice sweet, almost too sweet.
